Everything on this brilliant collection I've heard and own in one form or another with the exception of "A Gathering of Eagles". That piece alone sort of blew me away as I just wasn't expecting such a powerful 2 and a half minutes of music. Goldsmith wrote some of the greatest main titles of all time in my opinion and this ranks among them. I would love it if at some point there was a rerecording of that entire score.

I'm still enjoying BOTH CDs James! smile

Is the THIEF OF BAGDAD still set to record this month?

You're in luck, Rnelson! Gathering of Eagles is one of the Varese Club titles on SALE right now! I had to spend full price on it, but it was totally worth it. You can get it for only $13.99:

Very good sound quality, honestly (though obviously not as good as Tadlow's brand new recording of the Main Title).

You're welcome. Hope you enjoy the complete score!

I should also point out that they have some other great titles on sale in their shop:
https://www.varesesarabande.com/collections/on-sale-1

If you don't have them you *need* Goldsmith's The Red Pony and Williams's Family Plot. If you're into modernist Jerry then I also do recommend Freud. All of those are only $13.99 as well. Of more recent scores, Giacchino's Super 8 and Powell's Hancock are *absolutely* worth the $4.99 Varese is charging for them right now.

James, is THIEF OF BAGDAD still set to record in a few days? Sure hope so.

Per Tadlow on the Rozsa Forum:

Leigh Phillips has finished all the score recreations ready in time for recording next week....in his research he has discovered lots of unused music or alternatives....so probably around 120 minutes of music in all....or even a bit more?

Fantastic recording.
I had the Citadel Cd and the Intrada and replaced them with the LLL which is great, but this score was never among my favourites from Goldsmith. But hearing this new recording I kind of finally 'discovered it', it is really great. This is probably the versionI'll be returning to more oftenly.
Really looking forward for Thief of Bagdad.
I'd also love recordings of Morricone's Hundra and Red Sonja - great scores with very poor recordings.

I have begun my belated process of listening to my remaining The Blue Max scores, starting with the Tadlow re-recording.

Excellent release. Only at certain times do I believe that the musicians could have played with more clarity (power?). I still prefer the Royal Scottish Orchestra, using their performance of Tora Tora Tora from the Varese Patton disk as a measure, though such is in no way a slight against the Prague folk: very enjoyable and appreciated.

I found myself again noting the genius of Goldsmith on the main title from Tora Tora Tora, where the master manages to travel and reach such breathtaking epic scope in mere minutes, in just a single track. Some composers can score for hours and never achieve a measure of that (!).

Damnation Alley, Damnation Alley...

The Blue Max re-recording ends with an "End Title" track, followed almost without a break by a "Finale" track.
But the "Finale" sounds identical to the second half of the "End Title".
Seems pointless listening to the same piece twice in direct succession. Is "Finale" an alternate or unused ending or something like that? It doesn't appear on the soundtrack version. Didn't see anything in the notes about it.

This is simply the “Exit Music”, so isn’t really a part of the main body of score. Even though it’s identical to portion of the previous cue, James decided to include it for completeness…but, as with all soundtrack releases, you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Thanks for explaining.

Not quite....

What was previously identified as "Exit Music" was an alternate take of the end titles. On the LLL album it's disc 2, track 28. On Goldsmith at 20th volume 1 it's disc 1, track 31.

You can see my sequencing here: https://the-sounding-bored.blogspot.com/2014/10/sequencing-blue-max.html

Seeing this thread bumped up again just motivates to listen to both the Tadlow and LLL albums again!
