I can't remember if they were included on the FSM CD ? Both albums were included on the FSM CD, along with the First Kloss album, which is pretty much different recording of the contents of the Savina album.

Well, someone's got to say it: this is the one for Thor ... It'll be interesting if Frank DeWald's research is taken on board in the notes, re the various track origins. The 'Arrius' Party' track is actually from the Rome sessions but was rejected (for whatever absurd reason) from the Savina album, to appear on the second Nuremberg album, and the Parade of the Charioteers was also a separately recorded single with the National Academy of St. Caecilia in Rome (who did the whole Savina album). The Christ theme was also from that second Rome session, for a single, and it's the Singers of the Roman Basilicas (the Vatican Choir no less) who sing on that track, as with the Savina. Some people don't like the interspersing of the two albums' tracks in this way, simply because of the different acoustic of each. You'll notice that they're using the same track order as the Sony 2CD release, which is something of a giveaway as to the origins. Rozsa's own notes would suggest that the Bread and Circuses March should be later, and die-hards will want the 'Overture' (which is not the film Overture) moved to the intermission, since it's mostly material from the rejected Entr'Acte. The love theme and 'Memories' might be swapped too for a film order, since Rozsa mistitled the latter track. If you must buy one, buy the FSM, but if you don't, then this is one to get for those albums.

'Note that it's the 'first time that the music appears in the order that it was used in the film' .... ...which is of course bollocks, since they know very well they're using the Sony material. Perhaps that sentence came from the Sony: I must check?

This is a grey market boot release that takes advantage of the 50 year EURO rule. Are you sure of that? Jasmine aren't known for that sort of thing.

Obviously, (FWIW), if you can find the Sony itself, its two CD's contain much more music than the Jasmine single disc.

Obviously, (FWIW), if you can find the Sony itself, its two CD's contain much more music than the Jasmine single disc. Actually, I hadn't noticed this was a single CD. I'm not sure how they fitted both albums onto that, since it comes out to just over 80 minutes. The Sony doesn't actually have anything that this doesn't. They added three OST tracks to the Sony, pieces taken from laserdisc or even DVD, that had no SFX, namely the Overture, 'Main Title' and Entr'Acte. But people have those in far better sound anyhow on FSM. So there isn't really any new music on the Sony 2CD, which was about 45 minutes per disc. I suppose it's worth pointing out to anyone who's confused that the Sony we're talking about is the 1990s release, and not their more recent re-issue of the Rhino.

I have quite a number of CDs over 80 minutes. I'm consistently surprised when 15 years (at least) after the first 80+ minute CDs came out people stull persist in the myth that 80 is the maximum -- hell that Chandos Rozsa disc from last year runs just over 80. I even have one that runs 82:27. The reason is that many CDR burner software programs present a warning bar if the content being burned exceeds 80 minutes, so people assume that CDs are the same.

Thanks for the correction and clarification, William. Math was never my strong suit. (Especially when it's late at night and I'm sleepy: Somehow I got it into my head that there must have been more than thirty odd tracks on those two LP's, which in the light of morning I realize was wrong-headed.) I couldn't lay my hands on my copy of the Sony 2-fer when I posted, so I counted on being corrected if I was mistaken, and thanks to you we didn't have to wait long for that.

You weren't wrong Preston, but the extra 3 tracks were OST from DVD rips.

You're very kind, so I guess I can agree I was technically right, but truth to tell, I wasn't so much thinking of those 3 tracks, because I wasn't closely examining the track titles, I was just looking at the number of tracks… Don't ask me why I thought thirty couldn't possibly contain the totality of those two LP's; as I said, it was late and I was getting sleepy. I do remember those few additional tracks, and I doubt I'll miss them on the Jasmine, if I get it. Possibly it'll be fun to have all those original LP tracks on one concise disc. But I really can't say I'm hurting for BEN-HUR these days, ever since the blessed bliss of the FSM release.

This would have been a nice cd for me when I first watched the movie in 1997. I loved the score and it got me fall in love with the golden age music. I immediately ordered the 2 disc Rhino presentation, because it was new and had all the music. It was a drag to get through, so much music! This presentation would have been better.
