Mancini knew what he was doing. This is a very interesting clip. The scene works well both with and without music. Mancini's contribution is is very subtle. Never seems forced. Without seeing the entire film, it's not possible to know how well Mancini's contribution works. I'd say say Mancini brought that extra bit of subtle under-emotion without being at all obvious. That's what great film music can do. Give us that little bit extra without drawing attention to itself.
