Joe Caps mentions the "Volume Two" that Young recorded. I know he's mentioned this before, and it really aroused the collector in me. I would love to hear what he recorded. Joe has also mentioned in the past that there was a 45EP for THE CONQUEROR (also Young). What a great start right there. Take the Decca recording of SAMSON AND DELILAH that WAS released (let's call it "Volume One), combine it with the unreleased "Volume Two" tracks, add on THE CONQUEROR tracks as a bonus, and you're already up to maybe an hour's worth of music, maybe more. (I'm basing that timing on the idea that "Volume Two" might be about the same length as "Volume One," plus the typical playing time of an EP of 10-12 mins. or so.) I'd buy one in an instant. Surely, THE CONQUEROR score must have survived somewhere. If not the 45EP, then perhaps the music elements might be found at Universal who now own the rights to this Howard Hughes produced film. From 1970 to 1980 I was in contact with a LOT of soundtrack collectors. Not one of them ever saw an EP to The Conqueror. Odd Page Cook is the only person in the world who had such an EP. Cook often made up composers and records. Back in the 70s Cook said he had an LP from the Netherlands (!) with classic 20th Century Fox music from the 50s. It quickly went out of print! Cook was the only person in the world who had this LP! Joe, are you SURE you saw this EP at Page Cook's apartment? Also, how do you know FOR SURE Victor Young recorded a volume 2 to Samson & Delilah? Did you SEE it? I doubt in 1950 Decca records would want a volume 2 to Samson. I hope I'm wrong on both counts.

Either a new recording (are you listening Mr. Fitzpatrick?) or if someone uncovered the original tracks, I would love a proper presentation of this beautiful, haunting score.

Page Cook had the Conqueror. I also saw it in the late 80s at footlight records going for $180 !!! As far as I can see it, this EP of THE CONQUEROR - with 6 tracks? - can apparently also be found in the Victor Young collection of the Brandeis University in Massachusetts. Just look under "Series 2 LPs": "Item 221: 10.i.1-6 Victor Young, "The Conqueror", undated" https://archon.brandeis.edu/?p=collections/findingaid&id=66&q=&rootcontentid=26821

marcgothic: I have a rip of that old laser. One big problem is that most of the scenes where Samson spends time with Delilah in her tent are from another part of the movie . . .I would say about a good 12 to 15 minutes are not the actual soundtrack as Victor Young wrote for it. All other scenes are the actual M&E. Hopefully the tracks are lazing around in the vaults awaiting for one of the labels to unchain them!!!! False M&E Tracks are becoming a plague. Parts of clear music are moved back and forth to cover parts of the movie missing the M&E, so there is music non intended for the scene. This happened with NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and I think I noticed slightly substitutions also on the M&E track of Rozsa’s THIEF OF BAGDAD. Joe Caps: I produced the Laserdisc of Samson. All we had was a music and effects track. But that was along time ago, and since then, many things have been found at Paramount. I don't know about this. Victor Young also recorded a Samson and Delilah Volume Two that was never released. As of 1995, the master tapes were still in the Decca vault. Joe Caps: …. In the early 1990s, I had a few friend who worked over at MCA and they had mentioned seeing the master tapes for the records still in the vaults. The existence of an original “second volume” of SAMSON with Young conducting the Studio Orchestra sounds to me as an archaeological discovery and is an absolutely astonishing news! I think we cannot leave this without a concrete outcome, and so, giving the news for granted, I wonder “who”, and “in which way” can take the job of locating and verifying the content, before to think it issued on disc.

I wouldn't be opposed to a re-recording (the Varese suite does sound a bit dry), but not if it's 3 discs with hundreds of minutes of music, or something to that effect. I think the suite is more or less the perfect length. Could probably sustain a sweet 30-40 minute release, though. THE QUIET MAN is nice too. With the two of them together, it's a good 40-minute disc. I certainly wouldn’t mind a re-recording of Samson and Delilah, though I doubt it would require 3 discs to cover the score especially since the film is just over two hours with overture and exit music. It would probably take two discs minimum based on my last viewing of the film.
