I’d like to invite all people enjoying the realm of British television and vintage espionage series to join in. The purpose of this thread is to deal with the last seasons—shot on 35 mm film—of the eccentric and witty spy series The Avengers, starring Patrick MacNee as secret agent John Steed and his last two actress partners: Diana Rigg as Mrs. Emma Peel and Linda Thorson as Tara King. It was produced by ABC (Associated British Corporation)—later turned into Thames Television—and financed by ABC (American Broadcasting Company): two ABC’s for one series!

Since StudioCanal released the Blu-Ray edition of The Avengers season 4 in the UK,
let's dive into that particular season.

THE FOURTH SEASON (1965-1966)
producer Julian Wintle
associate producer Brian Clemens
in charge of production Albert Fennell
composer Laurie Johnson

PRODUCTION RUNDOWN
It’s the intial season with Mrs. Emma Peel and it’s in black and white as in the previous seasons. Following her predecessor Cathy Gale, Mrs. Emma Peel introduces her black-leathered outfit in Death at Bargain Prices but things evolve from mid-season because she obtains a wide array of monochrome Swinging Sixties London Mod wardrobe that reflects her true “hip” identity thanks to costume designer John Bates working as Jean Varon who draws his inspiration from Op-Artist Bridget Riley and provides woman clothes in fifteen episodes.

It’s a Wintle season and Brian Clemens and Albert Fennell are just “hired” second-in-command partners while the story level is top-notch, the leaning remains restrained and classic, except in A Touch of Brimstone (a later episode written by Brian Clemens). To give you a clue, picture Danger Man with a fantasy-oriented nature. Roy Ward Baker is the leading director of the season. The onscreen credits for “in charge of production” means “executive producer”. On the whole, this season represents the very flower of elegance and refinement.

The purpose of this thread is to deal with the last seasons—shot on 35 mm film—of the eccentric and witty spy series The Avengers

Why these seasons only?

Is it because these were the ones broadcast in the U.S.?
Is it because they were shot on 35 mm film and not on videotape as the previous 3 seasons were?
Or, simply, because this is new on Blu-ray?

Anyway, I love the 4th season. I'll post faves in a following post. I like a lot of scripts from seasons 3 & 2 as well as season 6's Tara King series.

These are the only seasons I experienced as a youngster.
To me, the series always started with Mrs. Peel.
I agree with you, the Tara King episodes contain some excellent stories as well.
I watched in the late Seventies The New Avengers but it was a different feeling.

Anyway, I revisited recently season 4 thanks to the Blu-Ray edition: marvelous moments.

To me, the series always started with Mrs. Peel.

Understandable. I don't think the 3 American networks would have ever broadcast the videotaped segments simply because they weren't done on film.

I hope the appreciation for Mrs. Peel does not hinder watching the Cathy Gale episodes.
[IMO, season 3 had the most impressive roster of regular scriptwriters for the show. By the time of the season 5 color segments, it seems to me that Philip Levene and Brian Clemens dominated with too many outlandish (and silly) stories]

Notes
This first “film stock” season has five cinematographers. The first broadcast episode (“The Town of No Return”) is achieved by Ernest Steward but the first produced episode (“The Murder Market”) is by Gerry Turpin who has the Film Noir look—Turpin shoots the first five episodes and exits forever. The most prolific craftsman remains Alan Hume who shoots the following six episodes after Turpin’s departure. Despite six credits, Lionel Banes vanishes from the series. Only three artisans will continue to participate in the next seasons: Alan Hume (S5, S6), Ernest Steward (S5), Gilbert Taylor (S5, S6).

my favorite season 4 episodes are either directed by Peter Graham Scott (or James Hill) and written by scriptwriters who worked on the prior seasons (Woodhouse, Lucarotti, Roger Marshall, etc.)

Some season 4 episodes feature wild and surreal scenes:

1. The Town of No Return (the tilted frame at the local hotel-pub, the existential void of the abondoned RAF base)

2. The Murder Market (the burial of Emma Peel in slow motion)

3. The Master Minds (during the fight outcome, a RAF training film is being projected backwards by accident)

4. Dial a Deadly Number (the Film Noir assassination attempt on Steed by two motorcycle drivers, the wine cellar showdowns)

5. Too Many Christmas Trees (the Dickens-like nightmare scenes of Steed)

6. The Gravediggers (the assassination attempt on Mrs. Peel by a mini train)

7. Silent Dust (the western film nightmare of Steed while Emma Peel, dressed as a male doctor with a long mustache, removes a bullet from his chest)

8. The Hour That Never Was (the existential void of a air force base, the tilted sound attack of Steed and Mrs. Peel)

9. The Danger Makers (The electrified initiation test—aka “The Labours of Hercules”—achieved by Mrs. Peel)

10. A Touch of Brimstone (the special meeting and drowning of Lord Darcy, Mrs. Emma Peel alias The Queen of All Sins, the whipping of Mrs. Emma Peel by leader John Cartney)

11. The House That Jack Built (the claustrophic and dead end Op Art rooms of the automated house)

¶ Notes from season 4

Item #1
Some plots borrow from many sources, for instance: Death at Bargain Prices is derived from Seven Days to Noon (1950), Room Without a View is derived from The Ipcress File (1965).

The US promo film aka the chess board for the fourth season of The Avengers

Notes on the chess board intro
The chess board US promo film in black and white will serve as the template (music and shots: the Champagne drinking Steed and Peel) for the season 5 main title to come.

¶ Notes from season 4

Item #2
Some episode titles are tongue-in-cheek references to films (Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder becomes Dial a Deadly Number) and television (The Man from U.N.C.L.E. becomes The Girl from Auntie and Auntie is the last name of an illegal merchant named Gregorie: sic).

¶ Notes from season 4

Item #3
The Op Art masterpiece The House That Jack Built highlights the family past of Mrs. Emma Peel aka Miss Emma Knight, chairman and director of an industrial empire given by her late father. Both the house’s interior design and Mrs. Emma Peel’s fashion design encapsulate the art line.

Item #4
The exquisite pleasure of watching this unique series lies in the colourful performances of the guest actors because of their personas and idiosyncrasies, for instance: the jolly bartender Piggy Warren (actor Terrence Alexander) with his long mustache and his raucous laughs in The Town of No Return or the vicious sadistic leader John Cartney (actor Peter Wyngarde) in A Touch of Brimstone.

Item #5
A lot of guest actors show up in Patrick McGoohan’s ITC series The Prisoner, for instance: David Bauer (The Girl from Auntie), Peter Bowles (Dial a Deadly Number), Patrick Cargill (The Murder Market), Clifford Evans (Dial a Deadly Number), Peter Howell (Death at Bargain Prices), Nigel Stock (A Sense of History), Peter Wyngarde (A Touch of Brimstone).

Item #6
Even actor Patrick Newell—playing the chief of the British Secret Service named Mother from season 6—appears in The Town with No Return and ends up hunted down and murdered on a desolate beach.

Item #7
John Steed knows two Soviet big shots: ambassador Brodny (Two’s a Crowd) and Colonel Ivanoff (The Girl from Auntie). And he investigates twice in the world of military officials: The Danger Makers and What The Butler Saw in which he disguises as three high-ranking militaries. In two episodes from the end of the season, Steed is particularly nasty: A Sense of History with St-Bode’s student Duboys and How To Succeed.... At Murder with ventriloquist Henry Throgbottom.

Item #8
There is a veiled reference to the James Bond film Goldfinger in Too Many Christmas Trees when Steed receives a post-card written by Cathy Gale from Fort Knox.
