PINOCCHIO---Walt Disney Pictures live-action remake underway of its classic 1940 animated movie. The script is by Peter Hedges (ABOUT A BOY, WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE?). Other Disney live-action remakes underway are BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE JUNGLE BOOK, DUMBO, MULAN and WINNIE THE POOH).

The project can go either way, but it's a tempting thought to imagine a James Newton Howard score for this -- given it's a Francis Lawrence film.

For real? I wonder what Joe Dante says about that. He's already enough disillusioned by the industry as it is. Check out my 1-hour conversation with Dante here, btw, where he talks about these things:

So they're remaking all their classic animation films? Hm. Interesting and a bit weird strategy. Many of these already have live-action versions out there, since the source material isn't by Disney and there have been numerous adaptations over the years. In fact, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST had a live-action version just last year.

Why are they releasing this news bit by bit? Just say we're adapting ALL of our animated properties into live action films. I guarantee you Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Pocahontas and Stitch is next. If I am not mistaking Alice In Wonderland 2 is supposed to be in development too.

I do see why they are doing this. It creates a "Fairy Tale" franchise with a proven built in audience. Same folks who saw, Alice In Wonderland, Oz, and Cinderella. I think Disney has an advantage as they can adapt their beloved treatments of the property. Any other studios that handle these properties are pretty much trying to make a classic out of thin air and they often appear generic. Fair or not most Westerners, think of Disney's versions as the "official" versions of these fairy tales.

Regarding FF and the Thing. Why can't they ever get his "Cro-Magnon brow" right?
