Carroll Howell of Dahlonega, GA went to be with his Lord yesterday around 5:30pm. He had been rapidly declining in the last few weeks with brain cancer, pneumonia, and several other illnesses. He is survived by his wife, 3 children, and 9 grandchildren.

We knew he was declining and my family has made several trips down in the last several weeks. I was quite fortunate to be able to go down and visit over the Easter holiday and talk a bit, play the piano (which he loves to hear), and just be there for my Papaw and Mamaw. The trip really was a godsend - the day after I left, he passed away.

You know, I have been extraordinarily lucky. I am 24 years old and have only now lost one of my grandparents. Any prayers that can be spared for my family in the days ahead is greatly appreciated.

My condolences to you and your family, David.

My grandfather on my father's side passed away even before I was born, but I was fortunate to have my grandfather on my mother's side all the way up to 2011, when he passed away at age 85. And I was 34. Like you, I consider that a privilege and cherish every moment he inspired me when he was alive.

My thoughts are with you too, David. Grandparents are wonderful, and you certainly seem to have had a very special grandpa. I'm sure you'll cherish those memories all your life, just as I'm sure your grandfather got so much pleasure out of his grandchildren.

Yes, sending some prayers up for you David.

I lost all of my grandparents before I really got to know them, the last was my Dad's dad. He passed when I was only like 8 or 9 years old.

I can recall his deep voice and kind manner, that he called me 'cracker-jack' and I always liked that. And I recall walking though his garden in the backyard.

David, my thoughts do go out to you and your family. You're lucky to have been there for him towards the end and to be able to remember him. My dad's parents passed before I was born, and on mom's side, I barely recall grandad, and grandmom passed during my late teens, but we were never close.

How lovely that he enjoyed your music smile

Best wishes to you.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.

But glad you were able to share your music with him.

God bless.

Losing a grandparent is usually how we first really understand death. Sorry for your loss, David. I'm sure he knew that he was loved by you and the rest of the family.

"Carroll Howell of Dahlonega, GA went to be with his Lord yesterday around 5:30pm."

That initial statement speaks volumes about your Grandfather's faith, David, and I share that faith with him. Your Grandfather is in an amazing place right now. He has only just arrived, and he is drinking in the wonderful sights and sounds of his heavenly home.
You are 24. I am 62.
I had a life much like yours, in that I enjoyed having a large family for many, many years. The grandparents were the first to depart, followed by everyone else.
Today, my only living relative is my daughter, and I cherish her.

I am certain that this loss in your life will cause you to cherish your family more than ever.

God bless you and your family.

I am praying for all of you to be comforted in this time of loss.

David,

Feeling lucky for still having grandparents at your current age shows your strength. Yet, I know this will be emotionally hard for a good while. I was fortunate enough to know all four grandparents well into my thirties and wouldn't trade my adult relationship with them for anything. I still have one grandmother living in an assisted living facility and take my mother to see her every week.

Treasure your memories and your family.

My sincere condolences.

Nick
