iTunes will release the entire saga on friday. For sure, the original trilogy won't be the unaltered version. Does anyone know something about it?

It's amazing that something like this is considered news. Weren't we all issued at least one version of this during our lifetimes?

It doesn't state if it is the unaltered version or the newer version

It's the same version as the Blu-ray.

I must admit, I'm not really sure what the fuss about this is. The Blu-ray has been available for a while, I don't see the advantage of having it as a bunch of digital files when I already have those discs in nice packaging on my shelf. And I'm not biting and paying $90.00 to get the new extras.

Post deleted.

(I was ranting about the soundtracks, and then read the article was about the films, lol)

Now here is a good idea... why not dump the complete prequel scores on itunes? Cheap money grab for disney and I wouldn't complain.

If it were the original theatrical versions, you'd know. There would be a lot of fanfare. They know how big a deal that would be.

Disney doesn't have the rights to the soundtrack - Sony Classical contractually has the rights to all 6 scores until ~2019 I believe. After that, I think Disney would own the rights to all of the scores except for Star Wars, which would be owned by 20th Century Fox in perpetuity (at least assuming the soundtrack rights fall under the same auspices as the films).

As seen by this release though, it appears that Fox and Disney can play nice (since technically Fox is the rightsholder to all of these releases for a few more years, yet Disney/Lucasfilm has a hand in these releases).

It's a desperate attempt to milk the already existing Blu-Ray transfers repackaged before the inevitable Blu-Ray release of the original unaltered versions Disney is currently and painstakingly trying to clean up elements and rights issues on Episode 4 with FOX.

And to all the naysayers that still want to defend that we will not see the films unaltered, It will give me great pleasure to say ' I told you so" next year. :-)

The fuss isn't really FOR people like us, I don't think. There are a lot of people who consume media (music, movies, TV shows, etc) on their phones and tablets. Probably the majority of people age 25 and below these days. There are also many others who have gotten rid of physical media and gone wholly digital/cloud-based. This is for them.

Indeed. I, for one, am happy with the news. Although I've ripped the dvd's on my computer, I will be buying them. I skipped the blu-ray (I've skipped blu-ray altogether) in the wait for an HD iTunes-release. That the films will be available in a cloud-environment is for this traveller with two home addresses more than a bonus.

I entirely agree Shaun, the marketing hype on this is absurd.
And I will happily play my blu-rays over a digital copy anyway.

Now George Lucas can disappoint (prequels) people via download. How nice.

Or make them very happy. Many people love the prequels, and love digital movies. Which needs to be said every time the usual canards come out, so done and done.

I LOVE digital movies. Yes, I still want my physical media (that nobody can mess with). But I love being able to pull up a gorgeous streaming copy on Vudu or Flixster.

Ok, so you are the first one that I have heard say it.
And it is qualified with the - I still want my physical copy.

I agree. I love being able to pull up a movie on my iPhone or iPad and having two small kids sometimes watching a movie on my iPad is the only way I get to see anything on my own. I have the Star Wars blu ray disc set, but I would pay for the digital files as well, but I think the price is steep. They should have made it around $10 a movie if you bought the set, but Disney already has high prices for their digital files.

I think it is really unfortunate that we are teaching a generation of kids that watching a movie on a screen anywhere from 3 to 8 inches is perfectly acceptable.

I've gotten into some digital downloads and streaming. Namely select episodes on iTunes, and Netflix.

But we're really compromised when we have to trust the service will work for us. I have content I can watch locally on my computer or stream from the iTunes store. I make it a point to download what I purchase where it's guaranteed I can watch what I purchased. Last time I tried to stream something from the iTunes store (that I already owned) the buffer period was an hour! (something was obviously wrong)

Netflix your at the mercy of the quality of the stream and content available. Sometimes I can receive a good HD video stream, other times it looks like a YouTube video. (though not often) I was in the middle of a series on Netflix when they decided to drop it from their library. So I missed out on the rest of the episodes.

With physical media we're in control and guaranteed availability at the highest resolution possible without any issues. I've never had a VHS, DVD, or BluRay player malfunction.
