Master satirist and commercial genius Stan Freberg, who first rose to fame with his recording of "St. George And The Dragonet" (a spoof of "Dragnet"), but was also best known his work on "Time For Beany" and for the jingle "We put eight great tomatoes in that itty bitty can" has died. Any favorite records or commercials from this creative and comic genius?

Stan Freberg was a giant in the 50's early 60s. He would skewer anything or anybody. He personally loved jazz and held a special dislike for early "rock 'n roll" and its artists. Enter his name on youtube and you can see/hear many of his skits. A favorite of mine was his takeoff on "The Lawrence Welk Show". Here he takes on Elvis and similar "artists" of the time. Probably not well known by many younger members on the list, but he was a funny man. Alas.

Here's his take on "The Lawrence Welk Show":

I used to have " Wun'erful, Wun'erful " on an old Capitol 45 rpm -- it was my favourite comedy disc for years ! Sorry to hear of his passing...

That's very sad.

I used to have his History of America album. Great stuff.

Well, almost anything - swing was an exception... "The Old Payola Roll Blue$" is half payola-skewering and half "Get this crap off the radio and bring back real music!" reactionary grumbling. But everybody has an off day.

"You ruined that, one of the loveliest parts in the whole" (trips, falls, drumbeat) "piece!"

I fondly recall his ad campaign for Sun Sweet pitted prunes in the early 70's--"They're still rather badly wrinkled, you know!"

Sad indeed. I used to love his comedy records when I was at school in the 1950s and 60s. In the PC days there won't be any more like him..

Sorry to hear that.
Stan was a big favourite of mine, in particular: the aforementioned “Banana Boat Song”
& “St George & the Dragon Net”.

Also: “Little Blue Riding Hood”, “John & Marsha” and ... still played in our house, every Christmas,
the glorious “Green Christmas”. (“Dashing Through the Snow, In a 15ft Coupe, O’er the Fields We Go, Sell-ing All the Way...”.

He also appeared, briefly, as a Deputy Sheriff in “It’s A Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World”.

RIP Stan....and Thank-You.

I respect the guy and he was doubt an innovator and very influemtial but........

like many 'hip' radio comics of his era , Fred Allen come to mind, his stuff just doesn't hold up+

The only truly funny bit from freberg was his parody of GUNSMOKE which consisteed almost entirely of sound effects - spurs, boots , horses, gun clicks etc.
Masterful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rip

+Bob and Ray on the other hands are timeless

He also created the commercials that featured the cast for the film, and Freberg was asked by director Stanley Kramer if he wanted to appear in the film.

Welk was offended by the parody, though on the other side, members of Billy May's orchestra who performed on the recording didn't care much for Welk's music.

I'm not surprised in either case.
