Hey, on the LLL release of The Challenge, people were upset about missing mixing bowl percussion (!), and after an outcry, LLL even went so far as to repress that one and send out "corrected" copies, even though the version they provided was the film version!

Now I realize Goldsmith is the most popular film composer in our niche, so maybe special care and consideration is given to making each new release of one of his scores as definitive as possible. But why shouldn't Newman and Herrmann merit the same perfectionism? Maybe if the cue was too damaged at the end that it needed to be faded out, that could explain it, but as has been noted Twilight Time didn't fade it out on the Blu-ray iso score, so I can understand people being upset about this.

I don't remember this outrage when Varese released the exact same program, however. If only a big deal had been made of it back then, I certainly don't think Varese would have repressed to fix the mistake, but perhaps LLL would have made more of a point of fixing that issue on this new release. Oh well...

Yavar

Pointing out that 40 seconds are "missing" from a release featuring almost two hours of music.

I agree Josh.

I well remember the 60s, 70s etc., when something like LLL's magnificent Egyptian
was just a dream. In the past 20 years or so we have gotten a HUGE amount of great Golden Age scores. Not to mention early Silver Age too! I never thought I would see the day.

Be grateful guys! smile

And here's another piece that not on ANY of the CDs:

https://soundcloud.com/jim-doherty-5/the-egyptian-nefers-house

Y'see, everything sounds fine and evocative, and Hamitic/African Egyptian, until the 16 second mark when suddenly we get:

Then it just doesn't work any more. Composers just have to be more careful about subliminal influences ...

I am just grateful to have it on 2CD's. I couldn't care less if it is missing 40 seconds.

Has the mystery of the 40 seconds been solved?

Maybe the reel got damaged during the Varese transfer ? Hence the fade out? But seriously who cares! The set is gorgeous and the sound superb! I'm talking about the Varese set. I still haven't opened my copy of the LLL set.

Has the mystery of the 40 seconds been solved?

We will be issuing the forty missing seconds on a CD - just the forty seconds. Yes, I'm sure there will be those who complain that the CD is on the short side, but they complain about everything. The list price for this CD, which will be in our new Elite line, will be $39.98. We'll have a seventy-three page booklet explaining all about these forty seconds.

I was simply reporting what I thought was a very odd problem, as that music cedrtainly exists elsewhere.

there has been NO answer or comment on the missing vocal in Nefers return. This is the same vocal first used in the Garden. If Fox has the one, they have the other.

The solution? The liner notes say the vocal was written in the score, but dropped from the film.
That is a lie. All you need do is go to the twilight time dvd and you can clearly hear it IS in the movie.

Our capacity to fixate on nothing never ceases to amaze me.
Kinda entertaining in way though.

yes, but the only version they could use was the audio from a camcorder that was recording a TV broadcast of the film in a hotel bar.
