Can someone please tell me the best way to convert FLAC music files to either AAC, MP3, or MP4? Please bear in mind that I am not very tech savvy so you'll probably have to spell it out for me a bit.

I have iTunes, but it doesn't seem to play FLAC files for me. If anyone knows a way around this, I may not need to convert them, but I cannot get the FLAC files to show up in my library and I cannot play them. Anyone know about this?

Thanks in advance, gang!

I've never done it myself, but it seems as if there's plenty of software out there to assist in the process.

I live and breath by All2MP3. It's real simple. Open program, select/ drag and drop files into program window. Make sure best quality is checked and hit convert. It will save the MP3's where the originals are. (so no searching your computer for conversion destination.)

It's a great for converting YouTube videos into audio only as well.

Thanks Bob and Solium.

Solium, the program you recommended is for MAC, my bad I should have specified I use windows. I did some searching and it was very hard for me to determine what flac --> mp3 download wouldn't give me a virus or malware or spyware. I'm very paranoid about these things!

Ultimately through wikihow I was recommended flac2mp3.com which is an online converter so I don't need to download. I am hoping this is safe. Have you (or anyone) heard of it? It's currently converting right now, so we'll see how it turns out...

I’m not familiar with PC software anymore. You can try Bob’s suggestions. If your worried about downloading viruses, Tucows or Cnet are considered safe places to get freeware.

Thanks again solium. The flac2mp3 conversion site worked perfectly, it seems!

If you get adventurous, or don't want to have to fire up the internet, I use Format Factory with great success.

I seem to recall I was using it for FLAC files for a long time, and it's a free program.

Google Foobar2000. It's a bit fiddly, but it's free and it works well... plus it doesn't (or didn't last I checked) install any adware crap on your PC unlike other so-called "freewares"

UPDATE DR! I just updated my version of this program.

If you decide to install it, get in contact with me. I'll let you know how to deal with the STUPID programs this version installs in your browser.

Use my screen name here, at yahoo. Just put your screen name in your subject line so I know who you are.

A great music player as well. I use this to convert though you have to do a search to find the proper codec if you want to use LAME mp3 encoder. Once you get your format setup you can save it for easy use in the future. Usually I rip my CDs to FLAC and then once I load them into Foobar I convert them to MP3 for mobile listening.

Just in case this question is also how do I get my FLAC files into iTunes library here's a (hopefully) useful page: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201169

In response to 'how to convert files'...

I have used free Zamzar to convert (admittedly non-sound) files with 100% success. You upload your file and they send you an email when it's done then you download it (or they delete it within 24hours). I've not had to wait very long but it depends on volume of requests. If you want it faster or store it on their servers for longer then you'd probably have to pay http://www.zamzar.com/ Given that FLAC files are apparently quite large they might be too big for the free service.

But if you're just trying to *play* FLAC files on a computer have you tried downloading the VLC (Videolan converter) player. It's free and I've never heard of any problems with it - I have found it to be fairly miraculous and seems to be able to play anything http://www.videolan.org/

In terms of playing the FLAC files directly on an iPhone type device, I've no experience of this but Macworld (keep volume OFF when visiting as there's something autoplaying in the background) has some suggestions, buyer beware and all that smile http://www.macworld.com/article/1157310/flac_on_ios.html

This won't work for FLAC files but I've often play non-iTunes* mp3 files on my iPhone via Dropbox. Needs wifi to work but supported media files are mp3, aiff, m4a, wav, mov, mp4, m4v.

*not bought via nor stored in the relevant iTunes places, but files that exist solely in my Dropbox folders.

Happy file-wrangling
Jo

I can suggest you two video converters I've ever used to convert FLAC to MP3/4 .

FREEMAKE Video Converter as an open recourse : http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

WONDERFOX HD Video Converter as a paid tool: http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/hd-video-converter/

Foobar2000, hands down. You must install the program and the required encoders for mp3 (Lame!), FLAC, Apple Lossless etc. Works wonderfully.

iTunes is CRAP for mp3 conversion. They purposefully use an old and poor mp3 converter because they want you to use the Apple formats.

For converting YouTube to MP3 I recently used:
http://www.mediahuman.com/youtube-to-mp3-converter/

It worked fine and was free. Perhaps it was a little slow but it is not something I use a lot. smile
