for his Jurassic Park Main Theme. I was listening to the Shos 8th and I couldn't believe he would steal that 3 note motif. I'm seriously thinking of selling all my Williams CDs and erasing his autograph from my Accidental Tourist Warner copy.

What a hack!

You feeling okay, David?

Get a life, David. What a ridiculous thing to get so upset about. I'm sure Mr. Williams , when composing JP, said to
himself, "You know, I'm sure I can rip of these three notes from S's 8th Symphony and get away with it!' A rude and stupid post. Who cares? These isn't a composer, living or dead, who hasn't borrowed from another composer with
absolutely no malice or ill-will intended.

Can you please point out the motif in the Symphony? (possibly with a youtube video)

(although I'm not sure if your post is serious or wants to make a point of something)

I smell an early April Fools' Day joke.

David -- I told you humour and FSM do not combine! This is a perfect example thereof.

Jokes have to actually be funny though...

Yeah it was an early April Fool's joke. I was in fact listening to the Shosty 8th and it did strike me that it kind of reminded me of Jurassic Park but as most of you know, it's silly to go crazy over these superficial similarities given the limits of the 12 tone equal tempered western tuning system. Especially when working in a diatonic framework.

I thought most would get the humor especially coming from me. Oh well...

big grin

I know the bit you mean, the first repeated phrase of the allegretto, which is very similar to the start of the main JP theme.

A grown up joke...

If you play Williams' second Lost In Space theme backwards it sounds identical to his first Lost In Space theme.

And if you play Star Wars backwards you'll hear Wor Sgnik.

And.... and... where the hell are my pills!!!

And the allegro non troppo clearly temped the opening of "Sahara", as can be heard in Clint Mansell's excellent track "Ironclad".

The fact is the Main Theme opening figure is a very simple one. It's bound to resemble many pieces composed prior to it because it's firmly rooted in diatonicism with the root moving to a major 7th and back. Hence my joke since it's ridiculous to vilify Williams for this. smile

It was actually amusing how some people got so offended by something so overtly silly.

Let us all agree that it's an April Fool's joke.

After all, Shostakovich never copyrighted those three notes.

Three notes.

What a laugh fest!

I love the 2nd and 3rd movements of the Shosty 8th.

And then there's the "sneaking around" music Bernard Herrmann composed for North by Northwest which sounds suspiciously like a motive for strings in the second movement of Shostakovich's 9th symphony....

When I saw TROY, I was expecting music by James Horner but all I heard was Shostakovich's 5th Symphony.
