Jackson Browne's song "Lawyers in Love" skewers 1980s yuppie culture and some American "tropes" in a deliciously vicious way.
Why not sing along, creeps?
"I can't keep up with what's been going down I think my heart must just be slowing down Among the human beings in their designer jeans Am I the only one who hears the screams And the strangled cries of lawyers in love
God sends his spaceships to America, the beautiful They land at six o'clock and there we are, the dutiful Eating from TV trays, tuned into to Happy Days Waiting for World War III while Jesus slaves To the mating calls of lawyers in love
Last night I watched the news from Washington, the capitol The Russians escaped while we weren't watching them, like Russians will Now we've got all this room, we've even got the moon And I hear the U.S.S.R. will be open soon As vacation land for lawyers in love"
NOT from the '80s, I give you this video, "Pretty Lovers" by Client Liaison. It's from 2014.
Everything about it is spot-on. This would not have been the type of music that I would have been particularly into back then, but the sound and look of this is textbook 1984. I believe they even used vintage cameras to film the video just to get that very specific "look." It totally cracks me up.
Watched the video above, and it does a good job of capturing that '80s feel, especially the music.
Since the 1990s, pop culture has been more self aware. It doesn't seem as though the '80s lampooned itself all that often within the decade itself. I suppose Saturday Night Live and other sketch comedy programs, both here in the States and the UK had such programs.
Looking back the, "a team" which was ok - good music from Post - but the show was farce at times, I did enjoy the way they created battle machinery some were a bit silly, example, ammunition fruit & veg, in 5 seasons, 98 episodes no enemy was harmed - if remembered so long ago Murdoch took-one or was it a scratch, no bad language either, boo.
Detest 80s pop music - if I went through the archives there wouldn't be no more than 100 songs max, what makes it x10 worst were them awful videos, Duran Duran "Wild Boys". Roger Kitter "Chalk Dust" Etc. Yeah, they lampooned that decade alright down an outs - yuppies were unified.
