I got a notice that Twilight Time is putting out a Blu-ray of APRIL LOVE with an isolated score track by Alfred Newman and Cyril Mockridge. I hope the isolated track is stereo, as the Dot ST LP and the Sepia CD reissue were in mono. But regardless, it will great to get this in complete form. It contains many great cues.

Just a note:

For anyone interested in English subtitles, SAE's newsletter incorrectly states that this Bluray has subtitles.
It doesn't have them.

from TT's facebook:
Unfortunately, Fox has no subtitle file on this film -- we always include them when the studio has them, but there is little we can do when they don't

I think there's also supposed to be an audio commentary track with Pat Boone and Shirley Jones.

I wonder if the ISO is stero. I also wonder if the songs will include the vocals or not.
This is a great underscore. the Dot lp had some great stuff on it , but also a few good things were missing.

The isolated track is stereo, and features some great Newman and Mockridge background cues as well as the backing tracks for the songs, sans vocals. A few tracks exhibit "wow," but at least 90 percent of the music is unaffected. It is hard to tell what is Mockridge and what is Newman, although a few tracks DO stand out as Newman because of particular orchestrations.

On a non-musical note, WOW, Shirley Jones knew how to fill out Capri pants and a pair of dungarees.

I got my dvd yesterday.
Wow, does this look good.
Will have to spend the weekend and editing the vocals, to make a true stereo soundtrack cd.

One of my favorite cues was NOT on the album. Check it out. It starts at 01:05:30

the transfer is simply amazing. From this same time period, we have Certain Smile, never released and never shown widescreen on television. I would also love to see THAT color restored like this.

Am going to spend the weekend editing this all together for CD..

For musical fans - in the song the Bentonville Fair, thereis a man in the crowd that sings a few solo lines beginning with
"Of all the girls n Bentonville, mine is the cutest by far"
He is dubbed by voice duble Bill Lee, the Bill Lee who also is the singing voice of captain von trapp in Sound of Music.

I just received Twilight's April Love yesterday and was astounded by the video and audio quality. I ended up watching the whole film and sat through half of it again listening to Nick Redman and Shirley Jones' commentary. The score sounds full and spread out between the front speakers. The Tugfire action sequences were amazing with lots of bass. Here is a generally simple musical which is so enhanced by it effective background score. Even the songs which are mildly pleasant are made special by their musical arrangements. I was wondering why other films of the same period such as
the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals are having so much difficulty receiving proper video transference to blu-ray. How about a stereo release of the complete score on CD, songs and all.

Just FYI....the Tugfire sequence where he escapes and Pat goes chasing after him. That was original score originally written for "Thunderhead, Son of Flicka" (1945) which was credited to Cyril Mockridge.

Interesting thing in the credits I never noticed before.
Vocal direction by Charles Henderson. Why?
Charles Henderson was Newmans vocal director at Fox until Ken Darby took over in 1949.
Example - it was charles Henderson choral work on Song of Bernadette.
Why was not Ken Darby used?

Charles Henderson was likely "on staff".

And...Newman and Darby were preparing "South Pacific".

No, Charles HJendersn was NOT on staff.. He had left Fox in 1949 and Ken Darby replaced him.
Hardly likely that Ken Darby did not have time for April Love but Alfred Newman did.

Charles Hendersons' credits for the mid-1950s:

1958 Mardi Gras (vocal supervisor) Fox
1958 Sing Boy Sing (vocal supervisor)
1957 The Enemy Below (vocal supervisor) Fox
1957 April Love (vocal supervisor) Fox
1957 The Helen Morgan Story (vocal arranger) WB
1957 The Pajama Game (vocal arranger) WB
1956 The Best Things in Life Are Free (vocal supervisor) Fox

If you don't like my answer find one on your own instead of arguing about my supposition. It's quite apparent that Darby did NOT do "April Love"....so go back in time and tell him what he should have been doing.

Newman could have taken a break to do some conducting. Darby had his hands full, apparently, with something. It's also possible he needed some time off and was unavailable.

But, since you know every DAMN THING there is to know about Fox, why don't you just present us with answers rather than expostulating queries that you later reject proposed answers for.

I objected to the way it was done -
first an out and out statement, like it was fact, not a guess. with nothing to back it up.
Then a shitty little snoot at me (again) as you do on any forum when you get a chance.

But again, Henderson was NOT under contract to Fox.
