I am certain that somewhere, years ago, I saw the missing Pat Boone songs footage from JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959)....the songs are still acknowledged in the credits (TWICE AS TALL, THE FAITHFUL HEART). Just got and watched the new 4K Bluray restoration, which looks and sounds amazing...and thought that those scenes could have made nice bonuses...if they indeed exist.

Well the audio still exists, as the songs are on the Varese CD. I'm glad they cut the songs out of the film, as they would have made the film a bit too twee for me, & he does get to sing a song early in the film. Maybe the original negatives were thrown away (like they discarded the negatives for the roadshow version of The Sand Pebbles). It's about a year since I last saw the film, but I think we see & hear the play-out of The Faithful Heart just before they hit the whirlpool.

Early reviews of Journey list the running time at 135 min, but it currently runs 129 min.

fox has looked several times for the footage, but has not found it.

One trailer shows Pat Boone singing the song on the raft. but without sound.

Me too. I think the laser included a few minutes of cut footage as a supplement

Maybe that's where I saw the songs...I'm sure I saw them, perhaps online, years ago.

I used to have the laserdisc and it DID NOT include the songs. Of the two, it's really a shame that "The Faithful Heart" scene on the raft was not retained as it's a good song, and was probably a vary nice scene. I think they cut them out only because the movie was somewhat over-long already, and the movie, though popular, garnered mostly very mixed reviews. Mason supposedly said that the movie was misunderstood and was supposed to be largely regarded as a comedy.

About the (35mm) Roadshow footage from THE SAND PEBBLES being thrown out by Fox.... DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL, THE MANIACS! But then, some people consider the definition of an overlong movie to be THE SAND PEBBLES.

Looking forward to seeing the new blu-ray of JTTCOTE... As for lost footage, it's so frustrating isn't it? The stories... the tease of seeing a snippit here or there and ultimatly the "We've looked and can't find it" answers...
It seems to me that it's all so very subjective. One man's boring film, is another's masterpiece. I've always personally felt that any film should be as long (or as short) as it needs to be to tell the story fully, artistically and properly.
My two biggest frustrations as far as lost material are RAINTREE COUNTY and THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE.
So it goes. . .

James Mason was very positive about the film in his book "Before I Forget" in which he praised the script, direction and special effects. I saw the film when it first opened and my biggest criticism, along with others who saw it then, was that they used magnified lizards, which looked exactly that, rather than animated models.

According to the BBFC, UK prints ran 131min 33sec which would have been the version I saw. I have a memory of Pat Boone singing during the descent (I think I can spot where the film is now cut) but I don't remember him singing on the raft (thank goodness!) but given the slightly shorter running time that may have already been cut from UK prints.

I thought the Dimetrodons were pretty effective....the chameleon not so much. (except for that weird shot from INSIDE the lizard's mouth looking out.)

When you consider that the production of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH didn't begin until July 1959 and it premiered that December, it's amazing it turned out as well as it did. Today, they'd spend more than a year in production and it would turn out like the Brendan Fraser CGI claptrap -- and with a mediocre score to boot. They just don't have the film craftsmen like they used to.

Oh, by the way, I've had the new 4K remastered edition of JTTCOTE for a week now. If you love the movie, get it. Not only is the transfer a digitally cleaned up, and properly color balanced scan of the original camera negatives, but the soundtrack has been newly mixed in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The entire thing is magnificent! My only complaint is they didn't port over to the new disc the 1959 CinemaScope trailer, which is quite nice in 1080p. For some reason, the new disc has a cropped and muddy trailer.
