It seems to me Jonathan Harris was revered for his egotistic, hog stealing, self indulgent take over of Lost In Space. While William Shatner is disdained for his egotistic, self indulgent, scene stealing in Star Trek.

At least Shatner didn't make Star Trek worse, and who knows maybe he made it better. But Harris clearly took a serious sci fi adventure and turned it into a joke almost over night, much to the dismay of the other adult cast members.

Is Jonathan Harris the only one to blame?
How about spreading that blame around to some writers, directors, and most especially producer Irwin Allen. All of his sci-fi TV shows began with promise and eventually became ridiculous.

I kind of liked how LOST IN SPACE started totally serious and how evil and sinister Dr. Smith was at first and then it turned into more of an adventure action comedy with Harris doing some fun character work, but by the season they got to the giant cardboard carrot suit and paper mache dragon suit for aliens, it just became stupid.

Shatner was the soul of STAR TREK TOS along with Nimoy and Kelly. They made it great and the supporting kids as well. Shatner played Kirk perfectly!

I met Jonathan Harris at a Comic/Memorabilia show sometime before his death and I couldn't help but love the guy. It was around the time of the feature LOST IN SPACE and I asked him he was going to be in it and he replied, in pure boisterous Harris mode "They offered me a f**king cameo! I don't do CAMEOS!"

He was great!

Well, okay most of IA shows go downhill pretty fast. The main point I was making (as the title suggests) Harris is applauded for his actions where Shatner seems to get mocked for his. Seems like a double standard.

I think the fact that Harris was just so flamboyant, you applauded his outrageous pomposity and we wanted to take Shatner more serious, but then all the rumors of him being a big ego and demanding close-ups doesn't sit well with someone you initially respect more.

Do I make sense anymore? All I hear and see these days are Ducks in Starfleet uniforms.

Actually that is a very good explanation and makes a lot of sense!

I was there on 9-15-65. I was immediately hooked. Took about the first 10 episodes before this kid sensed something was going wrong. Yes, Harris ruined it, but Allen let him, Fox let him, Paley let him.

I didn't buy the DVD's and won't be buying the BluRays. I can't stomach the idiocy any more*. But I'll be first in line when the CD box comes out. I wish there was more behind the scenes info floating about, as Trek has been given. How about some 4k frames of the Jupiter 2 for computer wallpaper? I hope the CD box will have the names of the orchestra players. To me, Fox had the best art department at the time. Who are the guys who you see in the effects outtakes? Fred? Tom? Give all those faceless people a name.

I liked Trek. Still do. But it didn't have any family, no kids to identify with at the time.

Hope this makes sense.

EDIT:

On the other hand, without Smith, there'd have been no theme for him, such as the one where he struggles off the flight couch, ("Reluctant Stowaway")nor the excellent adaptation Herman Stein(?) wrote for Smith (with the Robot theme mixed in) as he was lying to everyone about how he was already helping others, and went to the lower deck for coffee. ( "There Were Giants in the Earth")

My two favorite Dr. Smith scenes.

(1) The one where he deliberately plans to murder the children after they crashed landed on the planet. I think it was "There Were Giants in the Earth". Talk about intense for a 60's family show! Wonderfully pure evil villain.

(2) When he mourns the loss of Penny after he turns her into pewter. Perhaps Smith's one and only scene of redemption.

Talk about polar opposites!

Both of those actors deserve all the praise they can get. Both of them came into their space shows after the pilot had been filmed, and their star power saved both shows from immediate extinction.

He gets all misty about the kids and gets on the J2 (The Time Merchant).

"Dr. Smith may be a lot of things, but he's not a murderer!"
