Nice review, Bob. I think I will have to view it again, perhaps on DVD, to really get a handle on Armstrong's score. Most of what I noticed sounded lovely and fitting, but I was really distracted from the music by the MAGNIFICENT settings. I've never seen such lovely, scenic geography. IMDB says it was filmed in many areas in Dorset as well as various places in Somerset, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire. I'd love to see all the places used in this film. Carey Mulligan was very good as Bathsheba. She certainly opened the film as a rather independent, self-sufficient woman, but later disconnects from that image when she meets the soldier. Can't say I've ever been really fond of this Victorian character. You sort of like her and then you don't and then you do. The real find in the movie is the Flemish actor, Matthias Schoenaerts, who plays Gabriel. He did an amazing job of acting in this film, and I think we'll see a lot more of him in the future. Wish all of you could see this movie on a big screen. You feel like you are partaking in a visual feast the whole time.

Once I'd gotten over the whole THE VILLAGE (ergo Vaughan-Williams) connections, this score has been quite a slow-but-lovely-burner for me. The final track on the CD - Love Theme - is first rate Armstrong. Such a great theme (it's introduced in the cue Oak Returns and is threaded throughout the score). Excellent stuff, highly recommended.
