Alexandre Desplat was invited to Guillaume Durand's "Culture Club" show on French Radio Classique, this sunday (https://twitter.com/radioclassique/status/577149763625345024/photo/1).

He talked, among other things, about his education, living in Europe and working in the US, the impact of the music of Jarre, Delerue, North, Goldsmith and Williams (and in particular the revelatory experience of listening to the original "Star Wars"), creating Traffic Quintet with his wife, how he was sure NOT to win the Oscar that night, and that winning it has currently no impact on work proposals since he is already booked until 2017 and just takes no calls!

He then whished to end the program with the Main title of "Godzilla". Asked about this choice, he answered that he was at first a little reluctant to score this type of movie, but then he saw Gareth Edwards previous movie, "Monsters", and was blown away by it and immediately took the job. And now, he's very happy because he's "going to score Edwards' next movie, a Star Wars spin off, which is extremely exciting"

First, Harry Potter and now, Star Wars. Amazing.

I'm confident that this will yield a terrific score.

Dense ostianato string writing that goes nowhere. Great.

I don't care if Morricone is getting hot under the collar yet again, but this is terrible news. There were only two A list composers working today that I hoped would NOT get this project -- Desplat and Giacchino. Most anyone else I could have tolerated. But I realized the risk of either of those two getting it was high. Hopefully, Desplat will deliver an even more anonymous score than usual, so that I don't get annoyed by it, at the very least.

Feel free to be outraged and personally insulted by this opinion, but there it is.

Hot damn! Godzilla was such an unexpected breath of fresh air. This has the potential to be outstanding.

A couple of ridiculously negative comments above...

Sure, some of Desplat's work can be under developed and under stated, but that is usually down to the content of the films he's worked on. Unlike many modern composers he knows how to write melodies for emotion, action and drama; he already has a fantastic back catalogue of great music.

I'm looking forward to this.

Agreed. All of this hate is surprising. His writing for big budget summer tent poles is decidedly different, but why is that so terrible? It goes against a lot of convention, but in the age of sameness movie after movie, I welcome Desplat's ear for invention.

Although there are many fans of Desplat's work, I have not seen that he knows how to write engaging, dynamic action at all. A few years back some folks went nuts for that animated Guardians movie, which for me was an awful score, and his Potter scores were underwhelming too. Godzilla, not a thrilla razz

He has done 2 scores that work like gangbusters for me, The Girl With The Pearl Earring, and Hostage. Hostage in particular was a strong dramatic score. But aside from that, I can't be counted among his fans whatsoever.

Extremely disappointing news. But, Edwards helming a Star Wars movie was bad news to begin with.

Actually, the Edwards part is one of the things I DO like about this spin-off movie. Big fan of his MONSTERS and GODZILLA (score notwithstanding).

We probably will only see about 20 minutes worth Of JEDI.

Really? You'd have been okay with say Danny Elfman or Hans Zimmer scoring this project? I'm ambivalent about it, personally. I love some of the stuff Desplat does but other scores leave me cold. We'll see when the film comes around, I guess.

Chris.

I wouldn't have called Desplat's score for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" anonymous ?

John Williams isn't going to live forever....this was going to happen sooner or later. At least it isn't a Zimmer Clone.

I have nothing against Desplat but he's yet to write anything I've liked. So that's more telling about me than him.

That said though, the excitement if him getting the assignment is misplaced in a way - or does no one here remember the overwhelmingly lukewarm response to his Harry Potter stuff? I'm expecting the same level of unrelenting boredom as the lower register plays four measures over and over and the horns plod on with the sound and lethargy of a dying cow.

JJ Abrams us what got me to finally step away from Star Wars. Desplat is likely the one who'll get me to walk away from film score.

I don't know whether I'll like his score or not, but I'm glad of the news. Star Wars is a big universe. I'm glad they have Williams on board for the main trilogy, but I hope as they continue to make one-offs that they also allow the filmmakers they bring in bring along the composers they're working with. I hope we get some nifty sci-fi scores out of this series that don't try to ape Williams too closely but that do hew closer to the grand romantic symphonics we expect of Star Wars than to the more Zimmer-ish stylings that have been in vogue lately.

I know I don't post on this board often, however I've been lurking for over a decade and I say this with nothing but respect for you LeHah -- I think you're being perhaps a bit over dramatic.

I'll be the first to admit hyperbole runs in me like blood in most others.

But there's some truth in what I said.

A fair enough admission. And I completely understand that Desplat's not everyone's cup of tea. Even I found myself turned off by some of his efforts (Monuments Men). But with that said, I think it's worth being at least somewhat excited that we're seeing a mainstream composer apart from the MV group getting their shot at a project such as this..
