Short of having the events of Alien 3 and Resurrection being an extended dream in hyper sleep, I really cannot see how it could work at all. No matter how you cut it, Hicks and Newt are dead and Ripley isn't exactly her old self either.
That isn't to say that there couldn't be another bug hunt movie, closer in tone to Cameron's movie than the subsequent Alien films. But if Weaver is going to be in it, they have to sure acknowledge that she is a clone with xenomorph DNA.
I'd actually rather hear nothing of a new ALIEN, at least for another few PROMETHEUSES. I too am totally plugged into Noomi's Shaw and would be happy to have her helm the Engineer's Porkchop-shaped Express into whatever Giger-inspired Slimeball Bowl-A-Ramas Scott Free can dream up to throw at her. She's a heroine worthy of her own, complete saga, whereas Ripley's already had one; anything that bears her weary face is going to need the double syringe dose of Herbert West's reagent to even think about climbing back into her well oiled dock loader should "the bitch" come back.
It does feel like they're undercutting Scott, Rapace and PROMETHEUS just a bit; why not let them have free rein, see how the sequel fares...maybe make another before crowding them on the timeline?
