It's funny, I didn't make a post for my mom when she passed away just over two years ago, but, this morning when we woke up, we found Spooky had died overnight. Some of us have talked about our pets here before so, I decided to just let this out a bit.

He was an older cat, 18 at least, we got him from the animal shelter when he was 2. He had urinary issues and kidney failure years ago but pulled through, but in the last 2 weeks he started having more troubles and we knew time was short.

He was a sweet, loving cat, but never a lap or cuddle cat. He didn't like being held, but if we were watching a movie at night he'd get up on the sofa and sit as close as he could to me. We'd kid that he really wanted to be up daddy's butt. He always wanted to sit in the space we were in, since we'd gotten it warm. He'd stare with his big blue eyes until he got what he wanted.

And bless his heart, he usually got what he wanted big grin A little bit of peanut butter, vanilla ice cream now and then. He even would beg for Doritos.

We knew he was sick. We'd had him at the vet twice in the last few weeks and spent more than I could really afford, and last night had planned to take him back to the vet today.

He loved us, I know. And I know he felt our love too. He kept us company for around 16 to 18 years. The past few days it was clear he was feeling pain, discomfort...I hope he knew we did our best to care for him.

My mom loved him. She even named him. Yesterday, all this was on my mind driving to work, and I actually spoke out loud to mom, "Mom, Spooky might be coming to see you soon, you two take care of each other".

Donna and I don't have kids, Spooky was our kid. We loved him.

We'll miss him.

Sorry to hear that, Mike. When the inevitable end comes to our beloved pets, it's hard. Just remember the good times and cherish the memories. I'm sure Spooky felt very loved.

Hello, very sorry for your loss.

What a picture of your beautiful cat – those radiant blue eyes! And although Spooky did not like to be held, that gorgeous fur sure seemed to invite stroking. I know I would have tried.

From 1971 to 1986 I had a cat also named “Spooky” - all short grey hair with a white bib and affectionate. I loved when she played with catnip and rolled around. When I moved out, Spooky invigorated my Mom, becoming her new cuddle-cat child.

Spooky's last year was also fraught with urinary and kidney issues. No expense was spared for back and forth emotionally exhausting vet visits leading to final home water treatments. Mom and I tried our best. They're together now.

Again, my sincerest, deepest condolences.

So sorry about this, Mike.
Spooky brought such pleasure into your lives, and you brought such love into his life.
I've been through this too, so my thoughts and prayers are with you right now.

Oh Mike, I am so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful boy. My extended family has lost many pets this last year and the other day I posted this on my niece's FB page:

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened" Anatole France.

I will keep you and your wife in my thoughts and prayers.

Pets really are family. They love us without reservation and unconditionally, and it really hurts to lose a pet. So sorry for your loss.

I totally understand your grief. Losing a beloved pet is very tough. There's a poem that may give you some comfort.

Very sorry for your loss.
20 yrs ago lost two cats (brothers) in one week, was devastated.
Still think about them.
Have two 5 year old brother and sister kitties now, yet cringe at thought of a loss.

Thanks for your comments, folks. I took his remains to the vet's office to be cremated a bit earlier. We had wanted to bury him in the garden out back beside our previous cat, but the ground is frozen solid from recent single below freezing spells and two snows.

And erik's link to the poem reminded me of Hachi: A Dog's Tale, a wonderful movie that made me cry like a baby before razz If I watch it tonight, look out !

We'll get another cat, and soon. Just as we did before getting Spooky. Not having that other life in the house is missed immediately. Usually this time of day, I'd be here on one sofa , he'd be on the smaller sofa sleeping and I could just look over and whisper his name to get him to sleepily look up and go "huh ?" so I could blow him a kiss.

Umm..yeah, I'd do that big grin He was my little man.
