Samuel Fuller's 1957 CHINA GATE had a great score by Victor Young and Max Steiner. Young died while working on the film, it was finished by his friend Max Steiner. It's a great score and I sure would love to see it on a CD. I first saw the film in 1966 and always liked it. Oh, Angie looks HOT!

Are the tracks at Fox? Do they still exist?

A beautiful print of the film is now on DVD and Blu Ray. The film is free to watch on youtube.

Those who watch this Samuel Fuller film on youtube, please let me hear your comments.

Here's the awesome Main Title which I had in my Name the Movie and it's Composer Quiz about a month ago.

I'd love to see this score released.

Here's another great music excerpt from the film:

Powerful "Lea Walks" cue:

Finale with Nat King Cole singing the Title song:

More on CHINA GATE from my Quiz post:

CHINA GATE Written Produced and Directed by Samuel Fuller!

If you guys were really stumped I was going to put in some clues dealing with the Max Steiner help. But I believe mostly the whole score was written by Young who died during production and Max came in to put it all together and most likely add or extend a cue as needed. Nat King Cole put the Theme Vocal out on one of his LP's and Ramsey Lewis did a rendition on one of his Movie Theme albums. It's a great sounding score in the movie and I'd definitely gobble it up if it was ever to be released.

Here's the whole movie with all the great music:

And here's the pretty cool Titles Card Bob is referring to: (Seeing this on the SAE Facebook page, sparked my whole curiosity about the film & score and thus inspired my posting of the Music Quiz here.)

Very interesting Zooba, thanks for posting it. The main title soars in typical Victor Young fashion. The score reminds me of Victor Young's The Left Hand Of God.

Very rarely you ever saw two major golden age composers sharing credit on a film. The Egyptian (Newman/Herrmann) is the only film that comes to mind.

Maybe the elements were only temporarily lost? Maybe they found something in the meantime? Just wondering? It would be nice if we could get an update.

I just looked up that quote - he said it in 2006, so who knows, maybe they have been found in the intervening years. But I'm not holding my breath. smile

Maybe Nick can look again? I believe this was a film produced by Samuel Fuller's own company and only distributed through Fox. But maybe it was recorded at Fox? Maybe the Samuel Fuller Estate has the tracks? Or someone who worked on the film or his/her estate? A music editor might have them? Etc. We can only hope ......

The second film that Young scored for Fuller (partially) after "Run Of The Arrow".

That is correct Sir. It's an excellent score and we are lucky Run Of The Arrow was issued on a Decca LP.
