Dear Sony
Can you please release or allow one of our favourite specialty labels to release a complete and definitive 2 disc edition of John Barry's superlative academy award winning score for Dances With Wolves? So that us John Barry fans can close the book and appreciate this masterpiece in all its sweeping, majestic glory.
Thank you.

I expect to see a top-tier corporate-held release like this to appear in complete and chronological form as an HD download before they press discs for it.

This score has been released in every prestige format Sony has had going ("Original Master" gold disc, SACD) and it'll probably be a prestige format leader in the future too.

I expect it on HDTracks.com before screenarchives.com. That said, the currently in-print version crams as much of the best from this score on one disc as is possible.

Considering the film was released in November of 1990, a beautiful new 2CD edition would be a wonderful way of commemorating its 25th anniversary later this year!

Dances With Wolves is one of my all-time favorite scores -- I still listen to it at least once a month or so. When I was in high school it was one of the gateway scores that led me to this lifelong hobby of score collecting/appreciation.

Since analysis complete scores seems to be going round at the moment, I thought I'd re-post this and remind everyone that only HALF the cues in the film are currently on disc.

And there are other problems to fix from the previous Sony edition—not just that about 30 minutes of music remains unreleased.

Yes, please. I'm hoping they license out the title to Intrada or LLL, since they already put out their own version of the score which they marketed as "complete"!

Don't believe the marketing!

I know but how embarrassing would it be for them if they put out a second "actually complete" release on their own label? smile

It's Barry's magnum opus and best score of the last 25 years alongside "Schindler's List".
Every self-respecting film music lover should need this one C&C.

Ludicrous that a major score, an Oscar winner, such as Dances isn't available in complete form. I realise that the previous releases are in print and probably will continue to be a money spinner going forward but couldn't Sony do same kind of deal to get a limited edition 2 CD version out there?

Well, the film celebrates 25 years this year. A pretty good excuse to do something.

The irony of the music being TOO popular.

I could be totally off here, but I doubt this score still has much enduring general popularity. I don't think that should keep it out of reach for our specialty labels.

(That said, I've always found the existing CD to be quite long enough. Just my opinion!)

Sony refuses to do this with their most financially successful soundtrack TITANIC and actually make even more money off of it, instead reissuing the existing albums whenever they can, so why would they expand this?

No that's not a knock at DANCES WITH WOLVES, it's a knock on Sony for refusing to even consider licensing these scores out to the labels who would do them justice...after all, remember when they did their own expansion for PHANTOM MENACE? Look how that turned out.

Sony did release a volume 2 of Titanic. It was absolutely nothing like what we would have wanted, but they did tap that well again. As Schiffy pointed out with Dances With Wolves, it isn't clear how much enduring popularity some of these scores that were popular when the films came out will be with general audiences a generation or two later. And we're not general audiences.

I'd buy a copy of an extended Dances With Wolves in a heartbeat, it's a fabulous score, one of John Barry's greatest achievements.

Its a perennial favourite and even non -film score music fans adore this when played. I see now reason why this cant be reissued as a definite CD release. Infact if the Blu ray Audio format is another niche than can be exploited along with the regular cd format. Lets hope Sony doesn't miss the mark at it anniversary time this year.

I like Barry's DANCES WITH WOLVES, it has some beautiful moments and is an excellent score. Barry was the right composer at the right time for this film.

That said, I'm not so sure I'd jump and buy an expânded 2CD edition of the score?

It was nice when Sony released a more expanded set, particularly for the film version of BUFFALO HUNT, in 2004. Beyond that, I'm not sure a 2CD set of the score will play better than what we already have. Is there substantial material missing from the current release? Haven't watched the movie in a long time.

Same here. It's repetitive enough as it is.
