Haven't seen this topic for a while. Varese released a 1000 unit Edition that went out of print, but you can find it on amazon for relatively reasonable prices.

For those who have it, can you describe the score and what you think of it? Is it a must have for admirers of Alex North? I bought one when it was first released and only listened briefly and now it's in storage somewhere. Don't remember much about it. Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

What did you think of everyone's thoughts when you asked this very same question back in two thousand aught seven?

Our own sdtom reviewed the CD in 2009:

StevenJ also started a thread for the film in 2009:

You're welcome, zoob! Now I eagerly await your enthusiastic thread on the Patrick Williams score for It's My Turn, since you have a knack for reminding me of those fun late '70s-early '80s romantic comedies with those touching Grusin, Williams, or Conti scores.

I guess zooba likes the score. I can't really recall much of it, though I watched HARD CONTRACT a few months ago on the Fox Movie Channel. Can't comment on the score -- though I'm interested in hearing it apart from the film -- but I'm probably one of the few in the entire world that actually likes the movie itself.

It reminded me of the later Chinatown, so if you're into Chinatown, get this immediately.

I rank "Hard Contract" as my 18th favorite Alex North soundtrack, following "The Long Hot Summer" (my #17) and ahead of "Journey Into Fear" (my #19 North).

Giving this chestnut a good listen again today. I think Varèse did an amazing job of presenting a score whose elements were somewhat problematic. And thankfully they released it, because it's a beautiful score. I will have to take advantage of Mr. Phelps' "Tube" link and watch this at some point. This begs for a Kino-Lorber or Olive release. Heck, I'd say Twilight Time over those, but I'll take what I can get. Getting to finally see a film whose score you know so well is like finally meeting a person you've done business with over the phone for years. smile

A super average North score, it appears that North was not in the least bit inspired. A drone( autopilot } score, only for North completest.
