No, there's also his own song cycle "Seven for Luck", which was performed with soprano Kathleen Battle as the soloist (whether you want to call that opera or something else is a different matter).

He's also done a couple of albums with Jessye Norman, although they've been more in Broadway/entertainment genre with only the occasional opera bit.

Finally, I can't imagine that that's the only aria Williams has conducted live, since he was the conductor of the Pops for 13 years.

There's a big difference between "conducting opera" and accompanying a singer's concert appearance. It has been said that the opera house is the true training ground for conductors. Most of the past century's leading maestros spent decades directing opera. Toscanini, Furtwangler, Walter, Bohm, Klemperer, Solti, Karajan, Levine, Muti -- all emerged from the opera. Staged opera involves changing repertory, multiple languages, diverse styles, rotating international (and multilingual) casts, and prima donna singers trying to act in unfamiliar stagings while somehow following the musical cues. The opera performance is in perpetual danger of falling apart without strong musical direction. A professional orchestra, by contrast, can often perform (in the short run) without any conductor at all. No disrespect to Maestro Williams's enormous studio and concert experience, but I don't think he's ever led an operatic performance.

That's true, Rozsaphile. I don't think Williams has ever conducted a traditional opera staging either.

Ernani is an opera, so even i it was just an aria from it I feel my question was asked correctly. I knew he had never conducted a full operatic staging.

In any event, whatever happened to the opera John Williams was commissioned by Placido Domingo to write for the LA Opera, does anyone know if the project was just abandoned?

Yes, it was abandoned. I can't remember the reasons, exactly.

The closest we have now is Williams' song cycle SEVEN FOR LUCK (I'm not counting THOMAS AND THE KING, because that's a musical -- a very different beast). This desperately needs a recording and release.
