Was it just a Rights Money thing?

Here's Frank's singing the Theme Long Version:

Love Dave Grusin's bouncy score! Wish they or someone would put out his ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

I recently read on the IMDB that the first video releases of AUTHOR! AUTHOR!, by 20th Century Fox Video, CBS/Fox Video, and Fox Video have the proper music credit to Dave Grusin. However, the 2007 Region 1 DVD of the film has the earlier credit to Johnny Mandel. Can anyone confirm this?

I watched the DVD about 5 years ago, but I can't remember what credit was there. Interestingly, the AFI Catalog gives the film's music credit to Mandel, suggesting that they viewed the DVD (or some earlier studio print) when compiling their credit list.

Bob, a few years ago I found a copy of the DVD and never having seen the film, I bought it (the fact that it was reduced to £2 helped me decide fairly quickly). Anyway, after seeing your post I've just dug it out and watched the main titles. As the Dave Grusin song plays over the credits, sure enough, there in white lettering on a black background is, Music by JOHNNY MANDEL, and underneath, in small lettering, ORIGINAL MUSIC COPYRIGHT 1982 TWENTIETH CENTURY-FOX MUSIC CORP.

Fast-forwarding to the end title, the song again plays, but there are no references to music in any of the credits listing.

Strangely enough, a few years later when I was in a little music shop in town, I came across a copy of the Varese CD, reduced to £4. So I bought that too!

The song, "Comin' Home To You" was issued as a 7" 45rpm single in 1982. I have a copy. It's also listed at Discogs. https://www.discogs.com/Michael-Franks-Comin-Home-To-You/release/5938077

I think Varese wasn't able to secure the rights from Warner Bros. records, thus it was left off the CD.

The IMDB states that the 2005 Region 2 DVD has the Mandel credit. The American Film Institute Catalog records the film's music credit just as you list it, right down to the copyright notice. Apparently, Fox made revisions to the credits very late in the game, both versions survive in the vaults, and both have been used for various video releases. I wonder if both versions played theatrically at different venues around the world?
