I'm looking for the original scores of the 1959 and 1960 films, respectively.

RIO BRAVO never had a soundtrack album, right? Just an ep of the two songs? There's a Ricky Nelson CD with the songs and alternates of the songs, but it doesn't appear to have Tiomkin's score. What's the best source for this score on CD?

Regarding THE ALAMO, is there more from it on CD aside from the Legacy disc? and aside from the Prague re-recording?

Many thanks.

There is no release (CD or LP) of any original music from RIO BRAVO, other than the songs. The CD "The Western Film World Of Dimitri Tiomkin" has 8 minutes of the score re-recorded by The London Studio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Laurie Johnson.

The Legacy CD is the longest release of THE ALAMO's soundtrack.

RIO BRAVO has no soundtrack score release at all, only the Dean Martin-Ricky Nelson songs on vinyl way back when. And THE ALAMO original soundtrack recording has nothing more comprehensive released than the 23 track Legacy label CD.

Hope this helps

Were the RIO BRAVO tapes lost or something? what's the back story of this score?

Have to say I love the rerecord. It is astoundingly faithful to the original.

I wonder if original tapes exist for Tiomkin's score or isolated track exists on the elements. Since Warner Home Video owns Rio Bravo we'll probably never know unless there is a personnel change.

I don't know about the Prague re-records. El Cid disappointed me so much I haven't wanted to risk buying another. I tried to sell El Cid on ebay but there were no takers. It's in the trade-in box next visit to Amoeba.

Rio Bravo is on my list of scores I'd love to get, along with Bernstein's The Amazing Mr Blunden. As for El Cid, I personally love the El Cid re-recording. It's a permanent fixture on my Ipod.

You listen to music on your Ipod?

Okay.

I think SAE has samples online, I'll give it a listen.

But there's no substitute for the original.

Anybody need Prague's EL CID I've got one to sell or trade, only played once.

Yes, whenever I'm out and about.

I really like the recording. What do you find disappointing about it?

I'm sure it's disappointing because it's not the original. Everyone knows that anything not the original is a horrible pax on humanity.

I know. It's like all those re-recordings of Beethoven's symphonies. Give me the original anyday.

Personally, I find Prague's El Cid wonderful.

Too bad the original EL CID is lost to the ages. You have your choice of Graunke, New Zealand, or Prague.

Well, you can have my Prague EL CID if you want it, Bob. I'll trade it for a single disc of something or other.

The question of RIO BRAVO has been answered by Intrada's surprise release today.

Regarding THE ALAMO, didn't the Special Edition laser-disc have an isolated music track?
Does anyone know?

I never owned the laser-disc, but I seem to recall hearing that it had an isolated music track of the long version of the film. Can't a CD be harvested from that?

I kinda agree. As much as I like the Tadlow recording, it's still a shame about the originals. I'm pretty sure the Tadlow recording is missing a little bit of music too.

I can't answer about the laserdisc of the Alamo having an isolated score as I never owned it. However, I asked Robert Harris about whether the original recordings survived a few years ago on the Home Theater Forum (before MGM prevented his restoration effort), and his response seemed to indicate that the tapes no longer exist.

Yep, it is. There's a section missing from the swordfight between Rofrigo and Gormaz--one of my favourite bits, actually. Also a different ending to the 13 Knights battle scene. Other small changes.

Whatever one's opinion of the re-recording, the composer conducted original is always preferable given decent stereo sound. Should the original tapes ever turn up I'd buy the CD in a heartbeat.

If they ever do turn up (which I still hold out a little bit of hope for), I'll definitely buy a CD of the originals. By the way, the duel is one of my favorite parts of the score, too.

Edit: come to think of it; I'm pretty sure the first few seconds of The Expedition in the film are different from what is heard on the Tadlow. Apologies for driving this thread off-topic.
