After the disappointment of the Moonraker project, readers might like to know about the imminent release of three Network DVDs/blu-rays, each including a suite or suites of John Barry music as a "special feature". The films concerned are Raise the Titanic, The Tamarind Seed & The Legend of the Lone Ranger.

Release date of 9th February!!

More details of the music included on each release can be found on the John Barry website here:

They are Region B for those of us who don't have all-region players. Bummer. Any chance of North American releases for these titles?

Nice to see film releases so reverential to the music.

Thanks for that. RTT is my second favourite Barry soundtrack, after OHMSS.

I love watching the film just to hear the music and I have never downloaded the re-recording onto my mp3 player. I prefer to wait until I can listen to it all the way through on a proper sound system. I still have a sealed copy as well.

Bob Bryden, you can buy DVD players that you can hack to make them region free. In fact I only ever buy players that I know can be hacked. When I lived in the USA, I bought an inexpensive one from Walmart.

wow!

3 unreleased and often requested Barry scores! I am surprised this thread doesnt get more attention!!

maybe is the "suite(s)" in the title... when in the reviews they say they are very long and some even complete scores at Bonus section of each DVD/blu release

maybe the cds are closer now...

I can't wait to get these. I was curious about what exactly the music suites would contain when the titles were first announced. Pleased to hear they are going to be so comprehensive! This type of presentation should be a more accessible listening experience than an isolated score track as well.

I love that the the name John Barry is given such prominence on the cover art - clearly the music will be the main selling point for at least 2 of these 3 relatively obscure titles.

Fair point about the "suites" in the title of the threads. It's Network's choice of description for the music, because they aren't, strictly speaking, isolated music tracks, yet the quantity of music in each is equal to that of an average CD.

There's about 48 minutes of music in The Tamarind Seed, plus a separate song suite; Raise the Titanic has about 40 minutes of music, with only one small section containing some sound effects; The Legend of the Lone Ranger has close to an hour of music, plus a separate song/narration suite.

Of course we hope that official CDs of TS & LOTLR will eventually surface, but in the meantime these are excellent value for money, in my opinion -- even if you don't like the films. smile

Yes, the additional clarification was really helpful to me as well. "Suite" first made me think of rerecorded music, but I now understand we are talking about the original score recordings. Will probably get me THE TAMARIND SEED and maybe Raise the Titanic as well. smile

Excellent news, and even better at the price!

Forgive my ignorance (I'm not that familiar with isolated score tracks on DVD's), but do these suites mean I just put the disc in my player and listen to the music as opposed to having to sit through the film to hear them? I've only seen 'Raise The Titanic' from these 3 (which I didn't really like), so I'll look forward to viewing the other 2.

Yes, I believe it means you can choose the music from the DVD/BR menu and just sit through the music WITHOUT having to watch it in sync with the film.

No doubt many people will want to get these suites into their iPods or onto CD-Rs.

Don't look forward to the FILM of Legend of the Lone Ranger too much. It's poopy-doo. But to have the suites is something special.

At the risk of seeming pernickety, I'd have preferred it if they'd put these suites onto CDs which accompany the DVD/BR discs, film rather than have them on the DVD/BR discs themselves, but it's amazing anyway.

Cheers

Thanks, Stephen. Yes, getting the suites on CD-R sounds like an idea. Would have been nice to have seperate CDs included as you suggested though.

It would be great if a label like Silva could release this on CD.

I have reminded Silva that they were intending a CD of Tamarind Seed a few years ago. Just in case old Stoner has simply overlooked it. smile

This is fantastic news! I was expecting only 6-8 minute suites per film. I wonder what sources were used? I read somewhere that Lone Ranger and Raise the Titanic's music masters were lost? Maybe they found music stems? Hope the sound quality will be up to scratch, but either way these are must haves for this Barry fan.
