I think Lukas tried for this one but Morricone is not too enthusiastic about it being released.
Lukas said way back in 2002:
"I did look into this maybe three years ago. At the time PolyGram Films was open to the idea but needed to contact Morricone's people for permission, either contractually or as a matter of policy/politeness. Morricone's reps (I don't know if these are his Italian or LA people) said no for whatever reason and it died there."
I have this title coupled with "Red Sonja" on an "unmentionable" label. But it would be nice to have an "official" release. I just cannot imagine why the "powers that be" rejected such a wonderful score ???

Well, at least they ended up with an equally wonderful score from Michael Kamen

There are, like, 15 threads about this score, so I just had to choose one to ressurect.
In any case, all these years later, how is the possibility for a legit soundtrack release of this? It's one of my favourite Morricone scores. If not THE favourite.

A beautiful score. I still haven't given up hope that one day a release will happen.
With all respect to the composer, after all this time, where is the harm in releasing a rejected score like this? It's a lovely emotive piece of music away from it's film and the film itself was decades ago now.
Why not release it with any proceeds going to charity? At least some other good can come of cheering film music fans up.

For whatever reasons, composers make some strange decisions about the release of their music into the world at large. Likewise, it boggles my brain why John Williams will not allow his scores to THE RARE BREED, STORY OF A WOMAN & SUGARLAND EXPRESS to be released at all. And Chris Young and James Horner will/would not allow some of their early scores to be released or expanded.
I take it there's no further movement on this coming out anytime soon? I was just listening to it again and its just soooo great! Really hits the old emotional heart strings. I'm a huge fan of Michael Kamen's score for the film and think it a wee bit sad that his score is often dismissed in comparative discussions to Morricone's but there's no doubt that Moriicone's rejected score is one of his best. Its tragic that there's no proper release of this. Has anyone even tried or is it just a total shutdown project?

No, probably not just a month after I asked the same question.
As you say, it would be interesting to hear if any labels have made the effort throughout the years, and if so, what hindrances they've encountered along the way.
There hasn't been any movement on this in like twenty years, so why would there suddenly be now? It's not like we've heard a rumor or some label has said they are trying.
