I am really enamored with David Holmes, he is an incredibly versatile musician and film composer yet doesn't work nearly enough. I was ecstatic to know of his work on the film, '71, and jumped at the chance to see the film and own this soundtrack. Firstly, it is a great film, likely the best I have seen out of the UK since Steve McQueen's Hunger. The score is a thrilling, often lyrical, and always engaging work. I was regularly reminded of John Murphy throughout some of the more aggressive guitar-centric moments. All of that praise aside, the presentation of this album is a let-down. Instead of the 15 individual tracks which one can find listed at numerous sites advertising the album, this and other presentations are one complete track, totaling the complete 35 minute runtime. I always enjoy listening to an album complete, and especially one that only takes half an hour (and this one I especially dig) but it is unfortunate that I am unable to pull out some the individual pieces to listen separately or add to a playlist. On top of those complaints, the iTunes download did not include a digital booklet, which after having the joy of getting so many (my recent favorite being the one for Jonny Greenwood's Inherent Vice) felt particularly frustrating.

Has anyone else been able to hear this one? Has anyone even seen this film?

Terrific film, and the score was powerful and effective.

Where can you purchase it?

Note that the customer review does confirm that it's not divided up, but one 35 minute trackfrown

I saw 71 last spring. Amazing film, very reminiscent of Paul Greengrass's BLOODY SUNDAY.

The score is really beautiful, I keep meaning to pick it up.

Funny how the Amazon review is nearly identical to my thoughts! At least I am not crazy & alone.

And thanks for the feedback on the film, I'm happy to know people are getting to see this one. I'd much rather see a UK film like this be considered for Academy Awards rather than that other prestigious and dull war-set picture that is currently in your cinema.

The CD and vinyl run a little pricey for my budgets, but I didn't mind dropping $9 for the iTunes digital download.

I liked Holmes best in the late 90s when he did non-film work like this:

I've been meaning to watch this film, I'll probably watch it next week or the following one. To bad to hear they just did one long track with the score. If you can get the duration of each track you can split those 35 min of score in individual tracks with CUE splitter.

I've been doing this exact thing with what little free time I have. Work like this is exhausting. As someone who works in marketing and consulting, I have a newfangled respect for those music and audio engineers who can pinpoint into those finer details while putting together a music album.
