Henry, I do hear your pain. Ennio Morricone did compose for many more Italian or European movies than American movies. I could be wrong, but I thought that was kind of his own choice...
Morricone got very angry because he got lower wage than any other American composer. So he decided "enough with Americans" (sic!). At least this is what he declared in a BBC interview in 1995 (in 4 parts on youtube).
That was true in his TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARA early days but not after his Oscar nominations and the popularity of his things like THE MISSION hit the scene. Then he became on the higher strata of composers.
To illustrate in today's terms I thought the Danish film A HIJACKING was more suspenseful and real than MR. PHILLIPS and back then it might have got attention but today it disappeared in arthouse purgatory.
