Great Main Title music and score by Herman Stein to this early William Shatner starer, Roger Corman directed feature full of racial slurs (BE PREPARED) and powerful subject matter.

Check it out.

Shatner-related bit of trivia - he also played the leading racist in Rod Serling's 1958 Playhouse 90 "A town has turned to dust," also on youtube (dvdr can be found at certain sites):

Early Shatner was great in this ultra-hard hitting Corman flick that I recently re-watched via DVD. In fact, early Shatner was equally great in TZ episodes. Not to mention Route 66.

thanks for that, zooba. it sounds almost exactly the same as what he wrote for lost in space's episode the derelict, but with a pulsating elmer bernstein-ish rhythm behind it. and it dovetails nicely back into it came from outer space.

herman stein - immensely talented, sadly underrated, or underappreciated composer.

curiously - or perhaps not - both shatner and corman still get the piss taken out them, but they did some absolutely spellbinding stuff at times.

I liked the film, but the music did not grab me enough to want it as a standalone listen.

would that be on the crescendo cd? doesnt sound familiar.

forgive the miniscules, last child, but i'm still working with one finger only...

yes, the stein cues are on the gnp crescendo cd - maybe the faster pace and pulsating rhythm disguises what i believe to be more or less the same melodic line. in lost in space it is, as you know, much more brooding. and then of course i could just be completely wrong... wouldn't be the first time. wish i could check, but with this one finger only everything is an effort.

but enough of me - exclamation mark and happy face icon.. am i right or am i ain't your baby, question mark. oh, i can put sunglasses on the post. here.

I'm sure this has been pointed out before, so what's one more time. Climax, followed by throbbing riff with descending chords (try not to get too excited). There's also the Penguin theme at the end of THING to wonder about.

Music for the latter is indelible to m'mind's ear and when I listened to the LIS cue I heard nothing similar, confirmed by then listening to the latter. Granted, there is the throbbing/pulsating effect in both. Must be a thread out there regarding this effect...

THING's louder throbbing section might seem to drown out the descending notes, which in turn might seem to lessen the similarity. Might help if you play each cue after their starting climaxes; I included those for the similar way they precede the throbbing/descending part.
I let the Tiomkin cue continue to the end to demonstrate the Batman-Penguin riff.
