I found the new one to be a lot more transparent than the old one. The detail in the new mix is really apparent with the extra gross synth blats in “Centauri Into Space” and the bells in “Into the Starscape,” the violins seem to have an extra glossy sheen to them, and I found an overall better sound with the brass section. Keep in mind, these differences are subtle, which is more of a testament to how good the original disc sounded, but I definitely hear an improvement with the new one.

I've been spinning this a lot over the weekend and I'm warming to the new mix. The balance across the album as a whole sounds a lot more balanced than I first gave it credit for. I knew that Doug's musical taste would be solid, it just took my ears a while to get it. This is good.

What an odd coincidence.

After listening to the extended edition of Back to the Future II today, I thought I'd give Last Starfighter a spin, because for me the score is a kissing cousin to BTTF - both showcasing the 80's John Williams idiom, but each with its own personality.

And what do I find when looking to post onto an existing thread? Why, a BTTF gif of all things! These two really are kissing cousins. And man what a fine score and edition this is - I'm VERY glad I picked it up when Intrada released it - in fact both versions!

For those waiting for their BTTF expandeds to come your way, this makes a nice substitute taking us back to the glorious days of yesteryear.

I've been giving THE LAST STARFIGHTER some listens the last few days. I absolutely love the main theme but am finding it hard to get through the Mickey-Mousing cues and the EWI material. I know their purpose within the film itself and I think they work well there; just finding it hard to listen to them on the Intrada MAF. (Don't lynch me - I'm still giving it some more listens. The way Safan uses the main theme both with action scenes as well as with romantic sweeps is wonderful.)

Not that you're keeping track, but I'll post back here once I've given this a few more listens.

By the way, does anyone hear some of the Superman love theme in Safan's romantic statement of this main theme?

I run hot and cold on the Centauri themes. Which is a step up. I used to just run cold.

Can't say I hear Superman though.

The expansion of this score is a treasure.

Okay... this is going to be highly controversial but... to my ears this doesn't sound as punchy as Intrada's previous release...! The main title instantly sounds flat compared to what I'm used to. I release there's a greater dynamic range this time around, and it's probably a more accurate mix... and everyone's raving about it... and the score is brilliant and the extra music is amazing but... is it just me?

It is definitely mixed at a lower volume than the previous release, quite noticeably. That said, turning up the volume a tad shows off what is still a beautiful dynamic range with rich detail. Perhaps Intrada felt their previous release had too much "loudness wars tinkering" and opted to go back to a volume that was in less danger of clipping.
