It's a little hard to differentiate between what might be his best scores and what might be my favorite scores, but here goes: Best five scores (in chronological order): THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (Groundbreaking, edgy, and using electronic technology.) VERTIGO NORTH BY NORTHWEST MYSTERIOUS ISLAND THE NIGHT DIGGER OBSESSION But some of my own personal favorites also include THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, PSYCHO, and THE BATTLE OF NERETVA (in its complete form, as on the Tribute CD). I didn't even want to consider his TV music in my list above (it was hard enough making choices from only his film scores), but I will say that if I had, WALKING DISTANCE would be number one.

Like everyone else who's posted here, I couldn't possibly suggest 'best,' but my five favorites - the ones I return to time and time again (though still subject to change) - are as follows: Fahrenheit 451 (also perhaps my all-time favorite film score) Vertigo On Dangerous Ground North by Northwest Mysterious Island I must give an 'honorable mention' nod to his opera, "Wuthering Heights," which I've listened to quite often, and I've studied the score on-and-off over the years. I think it's beautiful, and if I were to offer up something as Herrmann's towering achievement, or even his 'manifesto' (if you can apply the term here), it would be "Wuthering Heights." When it comes to dramatic/theatre writing, I also love his score for the "Christmas Carol" adaptation he did with Maxwell Anderson. This still leaves off a number of scores of his that I adore, but I think those five are the ones that I'm most fond of.

Got to include the four Harryhausens as not only are they responsible for my love of Herrmann's work, but for my enjoyment of film music full stop. This is where it started as a mere boy in the seventies! Through Phase 4 I discovered other works so no surprise then that it goes something like this, and the order changes all the time: Jason and the Argonauts The 7th Voyage of Sinbad The Three Worlds of Gulliver Mysterious Island Vertigo It's so unfair because I must mention Psycho, North by Northwest, Marnie, The Twilight Zone: Walking Distance and The Day the Earth Stood Still. And I really don't want to stop there!

1. Journey to the Center of the Earth 2. North By Northwest 3. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad 4. The Day the Earth Stood Still 5. Fahrenheit 451

My favorites in no particular order The Ghost and Mrs. Muir The Magnificent Ambersons Mysterious Island The Devil and Daniel Webster Vertigo

The 5 best of Bernard Herrmann, 'in your opinion'... I really do not understand what is the difference between 'best' and 'favorite', in this case, if the premise is to point out the best in your opinion. In other words, if I wrote 'in your opinion', it is obvious that a subjective choice, and the best are your favorite, of course! Actually, 'best' is a problematic word to use in this case, because it implies some sort of objective standard. So the phrase 'best, in your opinion' is somewhat of an oxymoron. So let's stick with 'favourites'. Also, I need one more specification -- are we talking scores-in-the-films or soundtrack albums? For me, those would be two different lists. If I were to choose 5 of my FAVOURITE Herrmann soundtrack ALBUMS, I would maybe pick: THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY CITIZEN KANE THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR JANE EYRE THE KENTUCKIAN

Fahrenheit 451 (also perhaps my all-time favorite film score) Vertigo On Dangerous Ground North by Northwest Mysterious Island By strange coincidence I think my top 5 is the same as yours, with the exception that Mysterious Island is my favorite of the bunch. Yavar
