Sadly, I've given up watching this show. I've hated the last few seasons but came back to check Capaldi out. Unfortunately, I really disliked his interpretation of the role and the writing of the show continues to be too clever for its own good.

Mike,

As someone who has come to appreciate Doctor Who due to the new series (and have loved the writing - including Capaldi's interpretation)...

Are you a fan of the "classic" (for want of a better word) Doctor Who? Do you not like the writing because it departs from what you know be be the Doctor?

Or do you simply not enjoy the new series?

I have really enjoyed it from the moment Chris Ecclestone appeared as the new Doctor. I also understand that it is not to everyone's taste.

Rick, as a kid I was a huge fan of the show but lost interest in it after Pertwee left, although I still watched it, at least until hey brought in Bertie Bassett as a villain!

I loved the Ecclestone season and the early Tennant episodes (and though Tennant was brilliant in the role) but as it went on th writing just got too clever for its own good.

For the last few years, linear story telling has gone out of the window, replaced with tricksy stories, and the seasons all striving to follow a mysterious story arc tied to the doctor in some way. Bad Wolf worked but ever since I just think they have lost the plot (literally and figuratively).

Against my better judgement I did watch it last night but hated it. I like Capalldi as an actor generally (saw him on stage in The Lavender Hill mob and he was superb) but hate his take on the Doctor. And again the writing is appalling. I won't be wasting any more time watching it.

I still generally like DW. Only know the reboot series. Never saw the classic series. I've liked all the new Doctors except ironically everyone's favorite, Ecclestone and Rose. Didn't like either of them.

DW gives me a good sci fi fantasy fix without being to violent and the series has a lot of heart missing from Hollywood blockbusters. I do find the convoluted story lines as a whole to confusing for my tastes.

I don't think they should have opened this series with such a dramatic set up. A simple, smaller story line would have been better.

I thought it was pretty terrific on the whole last night, but then I am also quite a Dalek fan. I've always been a Who fan since my earliest memory in '65, with my favourite being Jon Pertwee. The new series could do with some more traditional storytelling sometimes, as it does try to be too clever and pacey, but I still get that excitement at the prospect of a new series/story.

As for the Doctors I don't think they've dropped the ball once casting-wise since 2005. All great, and I wish Eccleston had stopped for at least a couple more series. The only low points were Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, but I've always believed it was the state of the series they were in rather than the actors. McCoy's appearance in the one-off American produced tv movie bares this out.

I only became a fan of the series with the reboot (but I've since gone back and seen every single available episode since its beginning -- even those that only have sound and no images). I generally prefer the Davies era in terms of storytelling, and don't really like Moffat at all -- although he's done a few good episodes now and then.

Last night's episode was definitely among the better Moffat ones, but it still struggles with being too clever and too many elements crammed into its relatively short running time. That's been a problem with Moffat for some time.

Yeah, it's a style that works wonderfully on Sherlock, but not always as well in Who.

Series 9 is turning out to be the best series since 5. Only one stinker episode thus far.

Yes, and though special effect CGI was everywhere, it didn't RELY on it.

The synchro of the missile-downed airliner made it poignant too. Great allegory, but 'can't drop spoilers here .....

Spoiler:

Clever girl not so clever after all. While I've enjoyed this series a lot more than the last few I don't think they put enough emphasis into Clara's death wish. Seemed odd to send her out this way without any build up. Even Amy got pretty risky with the thrill of the ride. In retrospect it was implied I guess.

I was kind of expecting something like this.

They went with a fairly humorous special this time around. It was enjoyable. Though the ending was bittersweet.

So any announcements or rumors about the Doctors next companion? Please use spoiler quotes if appropriate.

Bit early for news about the companion. The only rumour going around is Moffatt's departure after series 10.

Thxs for the info. He had a good run. So wouldn't be surprised if he steps down after series 10.
