I'm not sure what there was to find. Bernstein had his own private collectionof his scores.
While he certainly did not have everything he ever did, Hawaii was one of the scores he had. WhenI was remixing Ten Commandments for stereo Laserdisc release, Elmer was kind enough to let me listen to his Hawaii tapes, which seemed to be complete.
Copies were later made for mgm/ua home vid to use for the restoration of the long version of the film, also for laser.
Bumping this because every Elmer Bernstein fan who hasn't seen this scoring stage footage absolutely must check it out. A wonderful glimpse into the creation of a brilliant score by perhaps the greatest film composer.
Finally found this segment from HOLLYWOOD BACKSTAGE which I remember seeing as a kid on TV! Cool 1960's TV Series. I have been searching for this Forever!!!
Now you can all enjoy it!!!! Totally cool! A Rare Film Music Treasure finally rediscovered. Enjoy!
What is fascinating to me is the announcer saying that "it was one year from Elmer seeing the picture to the downbeat at the first recording session." Can you imagine some of the great scores that might be written these days if a composer had that much time?
