I have been listening to some of my favorite scores ever lately - Raiders, Empire, Jaws, etc. And, of course, I am always listening to newer stuff. This week was a Silvestri week, as I listened to Van Helsing, G I Joe, Avengers, Eraser, The Mummy Returns, etc.

Here is the rub - The Silvestri stuff is vastly inferior to the Williams classics I grew up with, but I actually prefer the Silvestri at this point because it isn't old hat. It just seems odd that I would ever prefer the relatively themeless wall of sound over the beautiful melodies of my youth. But here we are.

Just "thinking aloud", so to speak.

I know what you mean. I hardly ever play 70's, 80's or even many 90's scores. I've played them to death for over 30 years and while they are still the best scores in my collection I just don't go to them anymore.
Also my tastes have veered a bit away from the action /fantasy/sci fi scores, and more into beautiful melodies from the likes of Delerue, Newman, JNH, Doyle, Fenton, etc.

I appreciate your honesty. I am in the same boat here - the only difference being - I don't listen to the "modern scores" that much because they are not rich with themes and leitmotivs etc. I do look forward to "The Force Awakens".

However, I do listen to brand new new scores which I have not heard before. An example of this might be the Bill Conti score to "Necessary Roughness". Even though it's fantastic to have, I grew up with the more memorable sound of Bill Conti - such as his "Rocky" and "The Karate Kid" scores, they will always be superior to me.... why?

Then comes that bigger question - why is that the John Williams "space operas" (too many to name) will always - and forever be my number one? When I play John Williams - I know myself; that I shouldn't play too much of his music - because I will not give the other composers (and scores) - the chance to "grow" on me! So I only play a couple of tracks during the week, and I try to concentrate on "what is new in my collection".

Having said that, I am overwhelmed with the amount of Star Trek music we now have. Star Trek is probably my favorite franchise that John Williams didn't write for! But then again - it's space opera!

"Space" scores will always be the best scores - and that goes for Bill Conti's "Masters Of The Universe" - his Magnum Opus!
