Justin Lim has just been announced as director of the next Star Trek film, replacing the previously announced Roberto Orci. Tyler has already scored five films for Lin, including three of the Fast/Furious films, and has also scored episodes of Enterprise, so he seems like the logical choice.

But then again, James Horner had scored two Jack Ryan films and three Phil Alden Robinson films (two features, one MOW) when Robinson hired Goldsmith to score Sum of All Fears, so one can't predict this stuff with mathematical precision.

The idea that Tyler in your mind has not already graduated without needing a Star Trek movie is amusing. After all, Tyler was doing more projects before Giacchino got a shot at Star Trek.

I'm sure the film is going to suck, like the other 2, but at least Tyler can be trusted.

I think the only thing Scott was asking is, is Tyler going to "graduate" from TV Star Trek to big screen. Just the transition from small screen STAR TREK to big screen. That's all.

Right except I don't think Giacchino ever really graduated to big screen Star Trek. Musically they were still far behind the earlier scores, especially the first 3 and STV. Though I don't expect to get anything better from Brian Tyler considering his latest output. In fact, I would very much expect any third film to have a more of the same score just like the first two Giacchino scores.

While I wasn't a big fan of Giacchino's last Star Trek effort, I'd rather have him back than bring in Brian Tyler, who doesn't appeal to me at all with his generic themes and you've heard one, you've heard them all action cues.

I really like Tyler's score to his two Enterprise episodes.

The REAL question is what the director will ask of the composer...

That is pretty much exactly what I meant. I certainly didn't mean that scoring a Star Trek film was a big step up from scoring, say, the imminent Avengers sequel, which will in all likelihood be seen by a lot more people than will see Star Trek 3/13.

JJ Abrams is still producing. Giacchino will score.

And (in partnership with Tony Morales) the pilot for the stupid-but-fun TV show Scorpion.

I agree that it's quite likely Giacchino will score this one. That said, I found Into Darkness a little lacking and too much of a re-tread of its predecessor, so I'd be happy to see someone else take a crack at this.

In an ideal universe, who would you pick to score this one? The Trek film universe has had some success at giving little known composers a chance to shine (Horner, Eidelman). After this year's wonderful Automata, I'd like to hear M. Zacharias de la Riva take a stab at this franchise.

Chris.

Since the film franchise is getting its first-ever non-Caucasian director, it'd be really cool if it could get its first non-Caucasian composer too...but crap, there's a real shortage of those in Hollywood!

I mean, would Terence Blanchard do it? The guy channeled Goldsmith pretty successfully for Inside Man so maybe he fits with Trek more than most people would think. But I'm thinking he wouldn't be interested...

On the other hand, there is talent among younger composers too...

Let's give Shaw the big break he deserves!

On this same note, have you heard Blanchard's score for Red Tails? He certainly has the action shops for something like Nu-Trek.

There's also a chance Justin Lin could get replaced, too.

Just pray Brett Ratner isn't next in line.
