At the press screening of Last Christmas yesterday, Steven Moffat revealed the title of a Series 9 episode. He’s pleased to present…

The Magician’s Apprentice.

The episode, expected to be the first of the next run of episodes, begins filming in January, but aside from that, we know very little! It’s probably written by Moffat, and we’re yet to find out whether Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald is staying or not. We shall find out this Christmas.

Whovians may recall the Twelfth Doctor saying to the Teller in Time Heist: “What do you think of the new look? I was hoping for minimalism, but I think I came up with magician.”

Here’s hoping Series 9 sees the return of an inexplicable magic that typically follows in the wake of the TARDIS, yet seemed (to me at least) to be largely missing from Series 8 – bar the occasional bit of wonder in stories like Listen, Mummy on the Orient Express, and In The Forest of the Night.

If you ask me there's been a little too much magic in Who these days. I know it's always trodden the path as near fantasy as sf, but I prefer the bias to be sf, and less pixie dust, magic solutions and.....well, Santa Claus!

It's times like these when I miss the Barry Letts/Jon Pertwee era. You wouldn't see Pertwee fencing with a spoon!

Well that strongly hints Clara is out, and a new companion is in.

Well I thought the Xmas special was rather pointless and boring. And its just dragging out the whole mystery if Clara is staying or going.

I must agree with Ford. Perfectly serviceable holiday special doing 'what it says on the tin'. Both funny and creepy by turns. Sure, it's very derivative of both Moff's own previous Who and certain cinema properties, but then that never stopped in the way of a good Who back in the 'good old days'.

SFX reasonable, performances - especially the regulars good, direction good, atmosphere very good. Not much to dislike.

Definitely one for the 'good pile', and we can't say that about ALL the Christmas Specials (thinking ESPECIALLY of The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe...aarrgghh!).

As Paulhickling pointed out it was very derivative. And I've been getting that feeling for awhile now. (IMHO). (Plus they make no secret they were parodying Alien with the face huggers) It needs new creative blood. I'm fine with the new Doctor but it's time to move onto another companion. (Though I thought Clara worked a lot better with this older Doctor) I never felt anything for her and Mr. Pink. Total boring soap opera stuff. Amy and Rory were far more believable as a couple.

Slightly OT...

cool
