From Facebook: JEFF BEAL joins "BACK IN TIME... 1985 LIVE!" and will feature flutist SARA ANDON performing the music of JOHN CORIGLIANO! A historic film music concert program premiering with the Golden State Pops Orchestra. June 11, 2015 A major concert announcement! Widely acknowledged as one of the true masters of our time, John Corigliano is the composer of a wide array of revered symphony and chamber concert works including a Clarinet Concerto (1977), opera (The Ghosts of Versailles, 1991) and a pair of symphonies in 1988 and 2000. When he accepted the scoring commission of director Hugh Hudson’s American Revolutionary War drama "Revolution" in 1985, the composer had only scored one film previously — "Altered States", in 1980 — and has only scored one film since, winning an Academy Award for his masterful "The Red Violin" in 1998. Being a period picture starring Al Pacino, Donald Sutherland and Nastassja Kinski, Corigliano would explore a dramatically different stylistic approach for his new score. "The Children’s Theme" was composed to represent the “innocence and purity” of Pacino’s son Ned and also to sing for all the young boys who have lost their lives senselessly on the battlefield. Written for legendary flutist Sir James Galway, Corigliano introduced the theme on tin whistle, (an “instrument for kids”) and develops it on flute as Ned grows. Thirty years after having composed it, Corigliano’s powerful, haunting and poignant theme is finally finding its way to the concert hall thanks to internationally acclaimed flute soloist Sara Andon. This opportunity sent the composer excitedly searching his archives for the original manuscripts, preparing this version — now redubbed "The Children’s Song" for Andon’s upcoming performances. Conducting Corigliano's beautiful theme is the Emmy Award winning comer of "House of Cards" ... the great Jeff Beal. We couldn't be more excited that to have Jeff join out concert to conduct this powerful piece. Corigliano took Los Angeles by storm earlier this spring when his acclaimed opera "The Ghosts of Versailles" played six brilliant performances at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The reviews were rave! "Entertaining... Emotional... Mysterious... Uplifting... Over-the-Top" - Los Angeles Times "Dazzling... A Spectral Spectacular... Bravo!" - Los Angeles Daily News

This is one of my very favorites of that year. I will always remember when I first saw Jarre conduct this at Royce Hall for a Sundance fundraiser. From Facebook: BRIAN BYRNE joins "BACK IN TIME... 1985 LIVE!" to conduct MAURICE JARRE's "Building The Barn" from WITNESS! A historic film music concert program premiering with the Golden State Pops Orchestra. June 11, 2015 The announcements keep coming!! Acclaimed Irish composer/conductor Brian Byrne now joins the exciting list of special guests of the concert Back In Time ... 1985 Live! Byrne composed the acclaimed score and song for the Glenn Close film ALBERT NOBBS (2011). For his ALBERT NOBBS music Brian received two World Soundtrack Awards, A Satellite Award and a Golden Globe nomination. Brian has collaborated with such international luminaries as Katy Perry, Bono, Barbra Streisand, Pink, Josh Groban, Lisa Stansfield, Van Morrison, Alanis Morissette,The Corrs, Sinead O’Connor, Alan Bergman, Ronan Tynan, Luis Miguel, Vince Gill, Gladys Knight, to name a few. He arranged a song for the movie Sex and the City 2 and played piano on Liza Minnelli’s cover of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it).” Brian had the honor of writing a fanfare for Her Majesty the Queen's most recent state visit to Ireland. Maurice Jarre's WITNESS was the best-selling Varèse Sarabande release of 1985 and his classic cue "Building The Barn" became a genuine film music classic. Though originally "orchestrated" for synthesizers, the Jarre prepared a beautiful full-orchestra version for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Now "Building The Barn" from Maurice Jarre's WITNESS comes to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center with Brian Byrne conducting the Golden State Pops Orchestra.

So it appears that the bonus tracks from Varese's original Goonies CD, tracks 31-34, are NOT on this disc. That's a bit of a bummer, as this new set otherwise looks pretty awesome. I don't have any of the earlier releases included in this set, but I'm kind of OCD when it comes to having the most complete version available.

Seems odd that such an epic and extraordinary concert event such as this is scheduled to take place on a freakin' Thursday night. Is the weekend booked for a private U2 concert or something? Let's not even discuss the Traffic on the 101 and 405 on a Thursday afternoon. Well there goes the afternoon and early evening just in getting there. Ford A. Thaxton

"Under attended"... too bad. Yes, worst since the early days of the GSPO. Everybody surmised it was the choice of a Thursday. It certainly was the worst drive I ever had to a GSPO concert. But the concert was sensational! Here is Jon Broxton's from Facebook: Yet another amazing night of music courtesy of Robert Townson, Varese Sarabande, the GSPO, and Steven Allen Fox, who performed a wonderful selection of scores from 1985. A few film music-related bucket list items were crossed off tonight: seeing Bruce Broughton conduct his own music from SILVERADO; seeing David Shire conduct his own music from RETURN TO OZ; experiencing the scores for COCOON, OUT OF AFRICA, REVOLUTION and THE GOONIES live. Watching David L Newman conducting a suite from Goldsmith's LEGEND was something I will never forget. Sara Andon's flute solo on Delerue's AGNES OF GOD was utterly transcendent. Paul Henning's violin solo on the John Williams-arranged suite from Quincy Jones's THE COLOR PURPLE was bewitching and beautiful. The fact that I am able to watch musicians and composers of the calibre of Lee Holdridge, Craig Safan, Jeff Beal, Joseph Trapanese, Conrad Pope, Brian Byrne, Cliff Eidelman, Benjamin Wallfisch and Christopher Lennertz showcase their talent and be in their element still amazes me, and I will never take for granted how lucky I am to live here and be able to experience this. Bravo to everyone involved.
