I decided to watch The 13th Warrior the other day. Must say that film wasn't as horrible as I remembered. It gets of to a rocky start but once Banderas is on the road with vikings it's actually quite a decent film (although the ending feels a bit rushed)
While I always loved Goldsmith's score on CD, it didn't quite worked for me in the film. At times the music is too big, too epic and it kinda distracts from the film. Goldsmith's music sounds like it is written for a slick adventure epic, whereas the visual are a bit more gritty.
Revell's original score is a bit more subtle and seems to fit the film's original intent better.
Nothing personal, but I have to disagree here. I consider this to be Goldsmith's finest score, and I've always been a fan of its use in the film. The duality of Vikings and Arabs is perfectly represented (albeit stereotypically), and the music hits a high point near the end when the 2 themes are played together at the climax of the final battle. BUT, to each his own!
I'd still love to see a director's cut of this with Revell's score re-inserted back into the film.
