Joseph Trapanese (Oblivion, Earth to Echo, Tron: Uprising) has been hired to replace Junkie XL to score the upcoming Divergent sequel, Insurgent.

I love Trapanese's (with M83) for Oblivion, but I really did enjoy Junkie XL's score for Divergent, the most accomplished score by that young composer (comparing to 300 Rise of an Empire and Paranoia). Junkie XL's score had some wonderful music -- and a few admittedly weak and pedestrian tracks -- and terrific main theme for the main character Tris. It will be a shame if that theme does not reprise in future sequels.

So, happy and not happy...

I like practically everything I've heard by Trapanese, so looking forward to that. Don't remember much of JXL's music to DIVERGENT (a mediocre film, btw), but I'm generally more positive to him than 90% here. But he's doing the next MAD MAX movie, so there's that.

Didn't know that about Mad Max! That's very cool. Between that and Batman vs. Superman, I'm sure he's fine without the Divergent series, but even though the film itself was weaker than it should've been, the score fit it perfectly and I'll miss JXL's contributions to that universe.

(btw, I like the moniker JXL, ditching the lame "junkie" and giving him a quick name like JNH -- I honestly don't give a care what he calls himself, I just want the music, but I would think the professional name JXL would be better than Junkie XL!)

He was actually known as JXL in the early part of his career -- back when he did that brilliant Elvis/"A Little Less Conversation" remix that scored highly on all hit charts back in the early 2000s.

So for me, he will always be JXL rather than "Junkie XL" or his real name Tom Holkenborg.

He, he...not really. But when the "A Little Less Conversation" remix came in 2002, I was starting to hit the dance floors quite frequently (I was about 25 at the time), so I have some nostalgic memories of that song. Then after that, I have no idea what happened to him untill he resurfaced as a film composer with Zimmer & co.

Oh, I hated that A Little Less Conversation song.

But this thing JXL did with Jan Hammer is cool:

M83 is not Joseph Trapanese. Trapanese worked with Anthony Gonzalez, who is M83.

I can't stand that Elvis guy, I guess that's why.

Ah.

Elvis Presley was one of my first musical loves, after I moved on from kiddie records. So he will always have a special place in my heart.

Anyone have any news on a possible upcoming Insurgent score release? A song soundtrack (only found on iTunes currently) releases on 3/17, and it has one 4 minute Joseph Trapanese score cue at the end ("Convergence"). Also, one of the songs on the soundtrack, "Holes in the Sky", is by M83, and it's pretty good.

Hoping for a score release!

(also, I still think it's LAME that I couldn't find this thread using this very website's search engine, and had to do the back-up method of using Yahoo search... roll eyes )

No Trapanese fans 'round here besides Thor? This is Trapanese's biggest solo assignment to date, and with so many people enjoying Oblivion and, to a lesser degree, Earth to Echo, I thought there would be more interest in this score.

Thor, will you be checking it out soon? It's aready third in line in my playlist.

The only work from Trapanese for which I am familiar is Tron: Uprising, which I enjoy. I am waiting until I see the film before deciding whether to get the soundtrack. It is disappointing that this is a digital only release, and I am surprised that the digital album is so expensive. They are charging $5 more than the standard digital album price even though the album fits on one cd. Given its price, I am taking a wait and see approach. Actually, make that "wait and hear" approach.

Sad to say that, while it does have its moments, Joseph Trapanese's score for Insurgent was a disappointment. It was a missed opportunity, and unfortunate that Tom Holkenborg didn't return for the sequel. I've come to enjoy Divergent quite a bit, and I feel like Trapanese's score did not retain any sense of thematic unity (Divergent had a terrific main theme, most often represented by piano or vocal, that threaded through the entire score) or real excitement. Holkenborg may have overdone the excitement effort with too much percussion, but he did conjure up thrills and a real kinetic energy that Trapanese couldn't seem to muster.

The Insurgent album is long, but there are way too many parts that drag with ambient textures and lack of melody. This is not necessarily a bad thing sometimes, but it contrasts negatively with the more varied and propulsive vibe of the first score. I'm planning on seeing Insurgent this week, so maybe viewing the score in context of watching the film will help...

I was hoping for something, anything, to pull from this one, but it's a disappointment. This is Trapanese's first misstep, maybe magnified a bit considering how great EARTH TO ECHO was.

Someone else listened to the score?! eek wink

Yeah, it's a shame that there really wasn't much to grab onto with this one, even when you're given 79 minutes of music! There really is just nothing that distinguishes it, everything is very rote, by-the-numbers, a little dull. Some pretty moments, but the action is pretty weak. No significant theme to grasp onto, especially after the (love it or hate it) strong theme from the first film.

At least he brought Ellie Goulding back. And people will start to appreciate JNH's Hunger Games and Paesano's Maze Runner better, since at least these improve with the sequels. But since the source material ain't as good as these two (the third book is practically hated by the fans), I don't think it can inspire a lot (Junkie's score had some great moments with the Lily's theme inspired theme for Tris, plus his action writing from MOS). And what's funny is that Trapanese worked in the first score, and given his credentials, he could've expanded the soundscape and themes from Junkie's first score.

I assume they'll get another director for the final two movies, given that the second film has a lower critical reception than the first one, and since it's more expensive than the first one, the box office results aren't very good.

I agree completely. I really liked Trapanese's score for TRON: Uprising. It had themes and enjoyable action music. I've listed to it several times since watching the show and continue to enjoy it. So I was surprised how generic the INSURGENT score was. I listened to it very closely in the theater and it was pretty bland. They could have tracked in royalty free buyout music with similar or greater effect. The Junkie XL: Divergent score felt very motivational and uplifting to me but the Insurgent score was pretty forgettable. Do we know who is scoring the next film in this series?
