ok, we have got characters you fear you will become, so how about characters you could choose to be? We have probably had it before but maybe its time for an update!?
so any character you wana be. For whatever reason, maybe a personal hero, someone with special powers superhero cartoon whatever you want.
Mine would probably be Eastwoods man with no name. He was cool, smart and always ahead of his rivals. Lightning fast, crack shot and nobody messed with him. And at the end of each film, a lot richer!
The title character of Don Jon...in shape, has friends, a cool apartment, a fun job, charisma and good looks to spare and gets to have sex with a different beautiful woman every weekend.
Bears eat as much as they can to get as fat as they can for six months out of the year. The other six months they hibernate. That's the life I want, baby.

Come on, Bill! You can probably narrow it down to four or five characters that people here wish they could be! Either you could follow them to a sci-fi or comic convention and see how they're dressed, or just rattle off the names that first come to mind: Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Batman, Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the two kids from Jurassic Park. For the "why" part of your question, I would guess because those were the heroes of their youth, young adulthood, and now middle age.
As for me, I'll buck the trend and say Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) from Midnight in Paris:
Why? I like his low-key-but-neurotic demeanor and that he seems like such a swell fellow. We also share an admiration for Paris in the 1920s. Gil doesn't shoot after Greedo does first or have a cool Lightsaber that goes vwoom vwoom, but I challenged myself and picked an unarmed movie character.
I reckon I’d like to be Kevin Costner's Mariner in WATERWORLD (without the mutant thing though). I quite fancy the idea of floating about on earth covered by oceans in my trimaran, escaping from the bad guys and having an attractive female companion in the bargain. Like a survival of the fittest type thing.
Sorry, I'm cheating a bit and going with a TV character: Thomas Magnum of Magnum P.I.
Do I really need to explain why? You're in the prime of your life, look like a million bucks and are 6' 4"; live for free on an ocean front estate in HAWAII, it's the early 80's, free use of a Ferrari, your buddy has a helicopter at your disposal, your other buddy runs a prestigious beach front club you have complete access to, babes, babes, babes; gruff, but lovable Higgins, access to the wine cellar, an honorable military background with ongoing ties to the military, you get to "gumshoe it" around Hawaii as a P.I.
Did I miss anything?
(I tried my best to properly use the dreaded semi-colon, but it still mystifies me)
thats more like it gang. Some wild and wacky stuff there. Smooth roger thornhill and blessed Magnum pi?? yeah i can dig that.
in fairness to jimbo, he is the voice of reason against sci-fi obsessions, keeping trekkies everywhere on their toes! But can you see what he did there ? he may have made some people rethink their obvious choice. Possibly?
nightingale, i didnt specify no t.v so thats fine, broad choice is cool.
a Bill Carson thread-winner award goes to the best choice/post!! haha
