I just love this score. I remember seeing the film in early 1993 and going back a second time because it was so good. Saw it on the big screen again at BFI just last year.

Score is just so effective..........and a beautiful stand alone listen. I never weary of it.

I have both albums but an expanded, remastered version of the original would be welcome.

Has there ever been any chatter from the labels about the possibilities for this?

I guess it's affected by Jones' general reluctance to accommodate expansions? But it's crazy that we don't have a better Promentory, the fade-out on the OST is cruel and baffling.

Or the UK DVD with isolated score...

The Taiwan DVD isolated score that I have is even better, because there's no PAL speedup, and no pitch shift. smile

Yesterday evening I watched the movie again. It's one of my absolute favorites! It somehow manages to be a war movie, combined with a costume drama, combined with an old fashioned adventure story. All told in a very efficient manner, with a runtime of only about two hours. And yet it never looses sight of the humans at the centre of its story. The storytelling and heartfelt performances make sure of that. Also props for the respectful portrayal of the Native Americans and their culture.

Besides all of that, the music is such an integral part of the experience. This is one of those cases where images and music meld together. Both of the available soundtrack albums offer a great experience. Both shining a unique light on the music and the different approaches to the music by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. The noticeably different soundscapes of both albums enhance this further, resulting in two unique listening experiences that enhance different aspects of the music.

I would love an expanded edition of the soundtrack, presenting us with all the music from the film. That would provide a third unique way to experience this great music. Considering the popularity of the music and the film, I guess the labels have already tried to get this released. Does anyone know more about the possibilities for an expanded album?

Jones would have to cooperate in order for an expansion to be released. That seems to be the holdup for any and all expansions of his music. Remember The Dark Crystal? If I remember right, he refused to cooperate, so the expanded disc was basically an isolated score pressed to CD, edits and all. He supposedly claimed that he was going to release an expansion himself. Nearly twenty years later, everyone is still waiting.

Hmm, maybe, and there have been very few Trevor Jones releases these past decades. The only two I can think of that are somewhat recent are the expanded editions of Cliffhanger and Nate and Hayes. I don't know if he was involved in those releases, but I would think that approval from Mr. Jones isn't a legal necessity. You'd think the rights are controlled by the studio and maybe Morgan Creek who released the original album.

Anyway, it was said in the past that John Williams didn't support expanded releases to many of his scores either, and look where we're at now! I am hoping that we will see the same happening with Trevor Jones releases.

I think a lot of the Williams expansions have to do with his trust of those involved, but he's still put the brakes on some releases. The Sugarland Express comes to mind.

I'd forgotten about Cliffhanger. To be fair, I'm not a big fan of Trevor Jones, but I hope this one comes out in expanded form. I know there's a lot of love for it out there. Maybe one of our illustrious labels is working on it as we write!

This is probably the best FSM review I've read about this amazing film and lush score. It captures everything I feel about both. The two releases of the score have a truly distinct difference and I do have a preference. However, I often listen to them consecutively to capture the unique nuances of both.

Definitely an excellent movie with excellent music and I haven't seen much beyond it that is similar, other than LORD OF THE RINGS actually which has some similarities to how nature is presented and photographed, especially with its characters trekking through the wilderness.

The score re-recording is what I gravitate towards for certain cues, but I like the rawness of the original for stuff like the "Fort Battle", "Courier" and "Elk Hunt".

Does anyone remember the original version of the film when there was a "searching" montage set to the "I Will Find You" song? It was almost like a music video right in the middle of the film, but the Clannad song gave it an interesting LOTR-like vibe.
