Hi guys,

I'm Carl-Henrik Buschmann. Norwegian viking! Long time lurker here. Great forum!

I'm currently writing my master thesis, it concerns the music in the Star Trek movies. I'm taking a musicological approach and my work will focus on analysis and different analysis methodologies, orchestrational/compositional techniques and the evolution of syntax in science fiction scores.

I would love to get my hands on the actual scores, the sheet music from the orchestral sessions. I've sent a request to the paramount library in a wage hope that they may have something. Have any of you a clue to where i might look?

Paramount should have everything (or almost everything) - but if you end up needing to look for additional materials, the Margaret Herrick Library (part of AMPAS) has Jerry Goldsmith's sketches to his five "Star Trek" scores, and NYU has copies of a few cues from Leonard Rosenman's "Star Trek IV" score.

You may also be able to write to Cliff Eidelman via Facebook and ask if he might have and be willing to share copies of any of his scores for "Star Trek VI." One final place you might be able to contact is the JoAnn Kane Music Service - though I'm not sure if they distribute any material for non-performance reasons (they would have full scores for the later Goldsmith feature scores) - still, worth contacting them, anyway.

Best of luck in the search and your thesis!

You might also look at the great http://www.filmscorerundowns.net/ by Bill Wrobel. Click on "Goldsmith" and notes for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" are there in PDF format. That site doesn't reflect the printed scores themselves, but with detailed notes about partwriting and compositional choices it may be better than nothing.

Wow, pretty blog indeed!

Hei Carl-Henrik! Spennende prosjekt! Kan ikke hjelpe så mye med akkurat denne forespørselen, men gleder meg til å lese når du er ferdig.

Hei Thor,

We should probably switch back to English at this point. smile

Since you're doing your thesis on Star Trek films, I'm sure you know this thesis on the first film, don't you?

Patrick Cameron, Anatomy of a Film Score: Star trek – The Motion Picture, thesis, university of Queensland, 1986

it's available here:

Thor, agreed.

Are your thesis public? Even though my concern is music analysis it's always interesting (and healthy) reading fresh ideas concerning analytical aproaches. [EDIT: found it on DUO.]

Back to topic, I hope to find a way to examine some of the scores without going to the USA. Will follow up on the suggestions already mentioned. Thank you all for contributing!

There is also this Norwegian one on Goldsmith that might be of interest, but although i contacted the author, I hadn't got luck aquiring it:
