Agreed. It is a masterpiece and just pips out both How to Train Your Dragon scores for me.

What is so good about this score? Maybe you can clue me in, as to what is so good about the "John Carter" score. I saw the movie a couple of times, nothing about the score really caught my attention, no I have not heard the soundtrack. What am I missing here?

I glanced at this thread back in 2014 and thought, well, I certainly have played The adventures of Tintin over and over, but my ultimate choice would be Ludovic Bource's magnificent The Artist. With Desplat's Benjamin Button to round up the top 3.

Now that all three are out of the 5 year time zone, my choice is undoubtedly John Powell's masterpiece, How to train your Dragon 2. Fantastic thematic writing, heartbreaking and exhilarating in one of those scores that restores my faith in great modern film music.

Man of Steel- Hans Zimmer (and company), with Captain America: The Winter Soldier- Henry Jackman a very close second.

Yes, I'm just as surprised than you are, but they've been spinning along in the olde CD player far more than anything else these past few years...and these scores also wonderfully accompany their respective motion pictures, too.

In fact, I've listened to Man of Steel as much as I've ever listened to any film score, period. I wouldn't even have a problem proclaiming it my all-time favorite film score.

For me it's got to be The Force Awakens, followed closely by War Horse, Wolf Totem, Rogue One, A Million Ways to Die in the West, and Cosmos.

I liked most of Man of Steel (despite my hatred for the movie) and bits of Batman v Superman (also hated that film).

Other favorites:

Ant-Man
Prometheus
The Hateful Eight
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
The Force Awakens
Spectre
Dredd

Try to name just one.

Mine is without a doubt:

LINCOLN by John Williams

I simply love the Maestro's music for the film. Superbly Powerful and Beautifully Heartbreaking!

Wonderful in the film itself and away from the film, I find it a richly satisfying listen in every way.

His "With Malice Towards None" Theme made me cry on initial hearing and does so every time I hear it now. "Freedom's Call" is probably my favorite Cue/Track.

5 years before that, I would choose Danny Elfman's MILK and John Williams' WAR HORSE.

Hey thanks. I love Lincoln too.

Please share yours. Thanks.

Certainly the two newer scores that I've played the most in the past 5-6 years are..
LINCOLN (JW) and REAL STEEL by Danny Elfman.

This is a good question... not the 'best' scores of the last 5 years, but my favorites? There are some that I might rank with or even above these as far as the quality of the music as I understand it, but here are my favorites:

Without a doubt, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. I'm still blown away by the amount of energy and creativity that John Williams put together in this incredible work.

Also, John Powell's HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2. His score to the first was absolutely amazing, robbed of an Academy Award. In the sequel score he brings back the great themes of the first film and develops them further, while also mixing in new incredible themes. Powell's work on these two films are among the best of this century thus far.

I also keep playing James Horner's WOLF TOTEM all the time, and not just for nostalgia due to his still-too-recent death - it's a wonderful and creative work, and while it has fingerprints of some of his previous works, it overall is something of a departure for him (at least from his work that I'm familiar with.

Probably Cinderella [Patrick Doyle]. Not the best, but probably my favourite.
