In honour of Remembrance Day, I think it is relevant to talk about the ending of Blackadder Goes Forth as it is 25 years ago that our beloved characters were sent "over the top". The decision to end the series on a serious note was absolutely the correct one. Had it ended with a laugh, I think it would have been a big disservice to all the themes explored in the series
I think that the ending is just as powerful emotionally now 25 years later as it was when it originally aired. It brings a tear to my eye every time I see it.
I dislike most of the other Blackadder series, but Blackadder Goes Forth is totally different for me. The jokes are better and I love the version of the main theme that plays during the opening credits. The ending of the series certainly was touching and unexpected.
I remember sitting there open-mouthed watching the end of this episode when it was first broadcast....not sure if it was to do with the unexpected emotional wallop, or the breathtaking audacity of the way it was filmed.

i see there is two people who need to watch series 2 and 3 again !! forget 1 - the other 3 series were on another planet once Ben elton complimented Richard curtis and the Comedy genius stars were brought in and who contributed improv and ideas as the weeks filming wore on. And 4 was a culmination and evolution of 2 and 3 with the addition of a monumentally tragic situation recent enough to make it genuinely sad and sharply relevant.
like the beard, bridesmaid - gives me something to hang on!!

I'll reply to your post before you can say 'antidisestablishmentarianism"
