I saw the original cast of INTO THE WOODS in preview, shortly before I left New York for Hawai'i. It was wonderful, and deservedly won several Tony awards. If you're interested, there is a video of it still available on Amazon and elsewhere, so that you can compare changes in the film version. (Although, one detail was changed, supposedly after I saw it, but before the opening. The Wolf's costume originally included clearly obvious male genitalia, which male wolves have. Since this Wolf walked upright, it was clearly obvious. But, I understand that costume detail was removed for the opening. In the movie, Johnny Depp wears a suit...) Generally, movie musicals aren't what they were, and perhaps never can be again. The best movie musical I've seen lately was CHICAGO, which took great pains to place all the musical numbers in a "fantasy" context. Presumably, contemporary audiences don't know how to accept characters singing and dancing in a show. (Even though they accept it all the time on MTV. Go figure...) As for other recent movie musicals, well, I'm afraid that, by the time they were made, they all suffered from overkill. PHANTOM looked nice, but was badly miscast in the lead. LES MIZ has just been around too long, so that, whatever film they made would suffer by comparison. (As well as, again, miscasting.) And I doubt MISS SAIGON will ever be filmed. (And even that show was changed a bit, after I saw the original cast of it in London, where it was more anti-American in the Vietnam scenes, as well as having a couple of other issues, though I thought it an effective, dramatic, moving show.) Still, these shows continue onstage, on and on. LES MIZ recently re-opened again on Broadway. And a new version of MISS SAIGON just opened in London. And PHANTOM is still playing...They even revived EVITA recently. (I liked the movie of that better than all these others, even though Madonna seemed to be trying to get our sympathy, not to mention an Oscar, by playing a manipulative goldigger... But it was effective as a movie.) For the same reasons mentioned by others, I did not enjoy the movie of SWEENY TODD. (Here we go again, again casting non-singers, not to mention changing the whole tone of the piece. With Helena Bonham Carter just as lugubrious as Johnny Depp, the comedy was effectively downplayed... Oh well.) I'll certainly go see the movie of INTO THE WOODS. Wouldn't miss it. So far, it looks to be a better adaption than most of the others lately. Time will tell.

If you view the DVD of the OBC (which I believe has just been rereleased), the wolf is clearly still in that original costume design.
