It's a Blu-ray disc. It will play in Blu-ray players. It will play in computers that have a Blu-ray drive. It will not play in a CD player.

"Pure Audio" is just marketing speak. It's a Blu-Ray just just as any movie you buy.

OK I know this was already posted, but it was inside a thread about James Fitzpatrick's upcoming re-recording of Obsession for Tadlow on Prometheus Records. Rather than clutter up that thread, here's a separate thread to discuss the new Music Box Records release.

Music Box Records revealed it via posting this image to their Facebook page on November 3rd

https://www.facebook.com/MusicBoxRec/photos/a.176201732422480.34925.143265539049433/801779413198039/?type=1&theater

Nothing else has been mentioned by them about it that I've seen.

I recollect this post sometime back. Not long to wait if this was accurate.

Mild.

From their site:

OBSESSION (2 CD)

Music Composed and Conducted by Bernard HERRMANN

A 2-CD set. Newly remastered and expanded deluxe edition.
A full-color 24-page CD booklet with in-depth liner notes by Daniel Schweiger.

Music Box Records - Limited Collector's Edition of 3000 units

Availability date: 02/16/2015

21,90 €

-------

"...For this special archival edition 2-CD set, Music Box Records has gathered the best sources available to this day in order to present faithfully the original score written by the composer.
CD 1 presents "The Film Score'. With the precious technical assistance of our sound engineer, we did our best to reconstruct and restore the score from the 5.1 Music Stem (courtesy of Sony Pictures) and a safety copy of the original tapes. The result is stunningly convincing. As such, we kindly ask you to listen to our samples and make a decision on the quality yourself.
CD 2 presents 'The Original 1976 Soundtrack Album' (courtesy of Universal Music) that was edited from Herrmann’s sessions and was specially remastered for this edition. We also corrected the cue titles of the 1976 London Decca release which were misnamed and incomplete in tracks 4 and 5. Now you have the details of all the right cues used in the original LP.

Our release offers a rare opportunity to hear the magnificent romantic Herrmann score in two different presentations and preserves the composer’s own irreplaceable interpretation, bringing this marvelous music back to life just 40 years after it was written. This Deluxe Edition with slipcase is limited to 3000 units and includes a 24-page full-color booklet with in-depth liner notes by Daniel Schweiger, sharing his comments about the film and the score, including new interviews with editor Paul Hirsch and producer George Litto. Everyone will no doubt be 'obsessed' with this true original masterpiece!"

I won't name any names, but the number of specialty labels that have ignored this score is stupefying to me.

And with good reason. smile

MV

Meaning "And with good reason is stupefying to you" OR "And with good reason labels have ignored this score"?

Good point, that pithy statement can certainly be read in two different ways.

For years labels like FSM, Intrada, and even us have been told time and time again the elements that exist for Obsession are not usable for a proper cd release...that the quality was subpar and a release would not do the fantastic score justice (thus the reason why Tadlow did the rerecording) . The licensing would also require dealing with UMG and Sony Films and would be quite expensive. It would have been a risky finacial endeavor that would have cost a lot of money to get done and may not be satisfactory for the soundtrack audience. I hope what Music Box found sounds good. The technology has improved greatly over the last few years so they may have been able to take something that was unworkable a few years back and make it sound good like recent releases such as Shane and Its a Wondeful Life. I personally look forward to the release.

Thanks, MV!
I think in next 1-2 weeks most of us will see (or it's be more correct to say "listen") how this story ends wink

. I hope what Music Box found sounds good.

And why don't you listen for yourself? It's so bizarre, it's like I'm the only one on this board who actually went to their website when the discs were announced to see how it sounded...

no, you're not the only one..I did the same.
And even if the audio quality through headphones connected to the internet is not IMHO 100% trustworthy, that was what made me decide to buy it..for so many years they told us the OST was low quality and not good enough for cd release, but what I heard sounded pretty good.
I guess that the people at Music Box used the latest techs and/or they have partucilarly "golden-eared" engineers..but of course I'll make up my mind for good when the cd arrives.

It's very simple to cherry pick sample tracks. You really can't judge the quality until you hear the whole thing (volume dips, potted sections, etc...). Why is that hard to understand?

What was on the site was pretty damn good. I look forward to listening to the whole thing to better judge the entire production.

I listened to the whole thing...and must say it was extremely helpful today in the final mastering of the new recording.

An awesome tribute to this release. And can't wait to hear your rerecording either!
