If I remember correctly, the hero is killed in this movie, then shows up in a tv series of the same name. Excellent movie.

American pop music arranger and record producer Don Costa scored the film.

ah don siegel. One of my fave directors!!!
an early no-nosense Dirty Harry type cop. and Costa's score, as bob mentions, was a typically good one.

Supposed to take place in New York, but shot mostly on the Universal backlot.

Supposed to take place in New York, but shot mostly on the Universal backlot.

The bar exterior with Harry Belaver and Don Stroud's night time walk were backlot, but most of the exteriors were shot in NY. The interiors were shot at Big U. Not sure if Griffith Park subbed for Central.

Saw this first on NBC Saturday Night at the Movies and loved it. I have a beautiful IB/Scope print. Ran it at the Rialto last year - everyone was knocked over by it.

Poor Steve Ihnat.

Is it true that one of the "taglines" for this movie was:

"He used to be angry. Now he's Madigan."

Would a soundtrack-CD be possible of this one because I definitely am interested in a copy.

I haven't watched it in several years (though I have it on DVD), but I recall being quite struck with how phoney the movie looked in comparison to the all-location BULLITT and COOGAN'S BLUFF. Luckily, DIRTY HARRY wasn't shot like MADIGAN, which I think helped end the use of the studio backlot in most major motion pictures. When it was used you could really tell the production was subpar, such as in EARTHQUAKE, though studio backlot streets lived on for decades in TV productions. One of the biggest distractions with "NYPD Blue" was the constant use of Fox's "New York Street." At least "Blue Bloods" shows a lot of New York.

Message to MV Gerhard at Lalaland and/or Douglass Fake & Roger Feigelson at Intrada....

Already 6 years ago since the last post was published...about a possible MADIGAN Don Costa CD release.

Let's update this topic...

Is there any chance of this gorgeous and dynamic score ever get a CD release at last or not?
Is there at least any attempt to do so but aborted, delayed or freezed for whatever reason....?

Buy the way, what about ROUGH NIGHT AT JERICHO also by Don Costa who would perfectly fit as a bonus?

Knowing the good musical tastes of our favorite labels executives, I just can't imagine there have no interest in these two great Silver Ages scores....

Any info of the eventual surviving of the master tapes?
Burned among others during the terrible 2009 Universal fire?

Thanks for posting Thierry! Don Costa is an amazing composer! I must look into his work further.
