Gave it another listen and it just doesn't get me at all. I really tried to concentrate on it and yes there's work going into the sound design and a brief melodic theme flitting about at times but I just think the whole things is so forgettable and doesn't really have anything memorable until 'Into The Portal' which isn't until track 16!
'Let Her Go' is not bad but again it just stands out compared to the unmemorable mush that came before it. Guess I'll need to admit defeat on this one.
Maybe I'll see the film and be so impressed that I'll be going back to the music? ... Naaaaah :-)

Hey, no problem and no defeat at all! It´s just not your cup of tea - and that you did try and remained constructive in your assessment instead of playing the usual internet badmouthing game should gain you everybody´s respect!

Saw the movie and I guess in order for someone to enjoy it, it's better not to have seen the original. It copies it verbatim and you know what the next story beats are going to be, even when it tries to do its own thing on occasion.

It's not all bad, the family has chemistry and for me the movie started excellent and had momentum up till right about after the girl disappears. Once the science team comes into play you get that same time lapse that the original did, with the family now accustomed to the poltergeist, however with the remake you don't buy it; there hasn't been enough confrontations. Though the new movie shows you a Giger'esque landscape of "the other side", there is no "beast" as there was in the original. It's basically faceless ghosts jumping out from the other side. There are a few nods to other horror movies (The Exorcist, Phenomena, City of the Living Dead) and there are a couple of intentionally funny scenes, but overall I felt the movie was rushed and the CGI is no match for the trailblazing effects the original had.

The score is tolerable when it needs to establish mood, but fails completely in the "family" department as well as the exposition stuff of the paranormal events. You can really tell the Goldsmith score is missed during those moments, even during the rope sequence and the aftermath sequence, there is no soul to the music, it's just there to heighten the tension without much result. Oh, and for me faaaaar too reminiscent of Prometheus. Get a new sound, really!

The whole movie feels like a missed opportunity given they did establish a likable family and even decided to make the boy the protagonist, which was a welcome change and worked well at first. I also liked the electronics in the house going crazy and just how much more electronic shit we have in our houses compared to the original movie. But the scares were too few and there are no payoffs like there were in the original. The premise here just doesn't feel relevant anymore.
